Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    SSL Certificate Installation

I am trying to get one of my sites up with SSL enabled and am running into problems

    Particulars
Host is VPS at GoDaddy, Win Server 2008 R2 - IIS7
    Purchased cert from GoDaddy
    CSR step is done

When I download the certificate from GoDaddy, I am prompted to select a server type, choices are Apache, Exchange, IIS#, and Other. I have attempted this with both "Other" and with "IIS7" and neither works when I add the keys to the WAS

Questions I can't find in the documentation
    1) do I need to install the certificate on IIS ? or do I just install it on the WAS as documented
    2) when the certificate downloads, I get a "bundle" file along with the key, but the WAS does not have a field for entering a bundle. Is this the same as the "Certificate Chain" ? GoDaddy's documentation says both files must be installed but I don't know where to install the bundle file
    3) I am running multiple sites and the WAS for this one is set to port 81, but the default SSL port is 443. The documentation mentions if you use any port other than the default 443, the visitors will need to include the port in their url which I definitely don't want. Which port do I use ?

I am really mixed up at this point and appreciate any help I can get (especially on a Sunday)

    Thanks, Dave

    Hi Dave,

I'm no expert on SSL, but I'll take a stab.

I assume that it is "other".

    1) do I need to install the certificate on IIS ? or do I just install it on the WAS as documented

No. Because you are not using IIS, you are using the WAS.

    2) when the certificate downloads, I get a "bundle" file along with the key, but the WAS does not have a field for entering a bundle. Is this the same as the "Certificate Chain" ? GoDaddy's documentation says both files must be installed but I don't know where to install the bundle file

Not sure about GoDaddy's bundle, but see attached image...SSL 2.gif

    3) I am running multiple sites and the WAS for this one is set to port 81, but the default SSL port is 443. The documentation mentions if you use any port other than the default 443, the visitors will need to include the port in their url which I definitely don't want. Which port do I use ?

443 it is. I don't know of anyway round this.

      Re: SSL Certificate Installation

Thanks for verifying I don't need to do anything with IIS.... that's what I thought but wasn't sure

I've tried numerous combinations including the Apache download and still doesn't work

      A Wiki doc at ---> http://wiki.alphasoftware.com/tiki-i...%20Certificate
says the cert file needs to be in a x.509 format and to download it as Apache and then open it, copy the key info and paste into a new file. The wiki document references V8 and above so I don't know if the document applies to v11 or not

Also, when I processed the CSR at GoDaddy, I stated port 81 instead of the default 443... maybe that's the problem ? I really have no idea at this point

        Re: SSL Certificate Installation

        It sorta works now.....
if I set the WAS and port forwarding to port 443, I can access the site by entering https://mydomain.com/
(www.mydomain.com and http://mydomain.com/ do not work)

if I set the WAS and port forwarding to port 81, I can access the site by entering https://mydomain.com:81

when I created the CSR from the WAS, I did not specify a port

when I submitted the CSR at GoDaddy to get the certificate, I specified port 81

Question, what port numbers do I use when filling out the information for the CSR and the certification ?
I need three things to work
        1) good url's using mydomain.com and www.mydomain.com
        2) the ability to run multiple sites with SSL on the same VPS
        3) be compatible with all browsers, IE, Chrome, Safari, etc...

Any advice or direction is greatly appreciated

        Thanks, Dave

Again, I would think you would need to specify 443, as 81 (presumably) has nothing to do with it.

if I use 443, won't that prevent me from setting up SSL on the other sites hosted on this VPS ?

I'm not sure about setting up multiple SSLs on the same site, Dave.

                Re: SSL Certificate Installation

Ports are not used in a CSR, and are not encoded in the certificate at all. If GoDaddy is asking for port information, it is for some use other than generating your certificate.

GoDaddy's "bundle" is the certificate chain file. They are just using different terminology for the same thing.

You cannot use SSL on more than one site on the same server unless you use a different IP address for each of them. This limitation is imposed by the combination of the SSL and HTTP protocols and effects all servers. Because you will be using a different IP or each SSL site, they can each use port 443.
