Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

One Instance - One WAS - Multiple Sites - Apache -> WAS - Can't find HOW TO Direction

A few days ago, I read a document on what is needed to configure an Apache front end, that forwards to a non-80 port for WAS, so that multiple sites can be hosted with 1 instance, 1 IP address, and 1 server.

I cannot seem to locate this to save my life!!! I have spent the last 3 hours searching this forum and google but still cannot find it.

Can anyone send me the link????

    Thank you!

This used to be possible in version 7 or 8, not possible since. A lot of experts have tried since then, no luck. You need multiple IP's, multiple Instances of WAS on same port 80. Or same IP but different ports.

So basically, if I write an application, and want it to be an SaaS type app, with each client having their own database, I have to have an IP address or separate WAS instance? I did not want to do a multi-tenant application because I expect images to be involved, and there could be many, and do not want to overrun 1 database with many images (and I do not want to save them to a file system at this point).

Come to think of it, I actually need 2 applications PER client. This will really never work with AlphaFive I guess.

I assume the same is correct about IIS as the front end?

I would like to think that when we have IIS/WAS that we can use IIS's host-headers to have multiple domains on the same web server, but I don't know. I am one of the guys that loved using Apache with A5WAS. It worked great and had many advantages over using multiple instances of the WAS. But I and many others tried with V10+ and were also told by Alpha that it will not work, was not supported.

You have to make your own decision over a multi-tenant application or separate databases, but for sure everyone I have ever met with a project idea over estimated there application requirements, popularity and ROI by 100 to 10,000 times.

According to customer service this morning, yes it will be possible with the IIS component. But they guesstimate a September/October

I'm assuming that the Alpha IIS component will work just the same as the php IIS component. It will just be a plugin that will interpret a5w pages. Then we'll be able to leverage the full power, security and features that IIS has to offer. It will also take a load off of the Alpha WAS dev team because they won't need to maintain an entire web server package, only the plugin for IIS.

EDIT: I hope they publish some documents before then about what's going to be deprecated in the switch. I've already heard that ulink is going away in favor of userid.
