Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

A new connection option is available to connect to SQL databases.

    In th epre-release notes:
Alpha DAO - ADO.Net Connection strings - A new connection option is available to connect to SQL databases. The connection string dialog now shows an option for 'ADONET'. When you select this option, the following connection string builder dialog is shown....

Does anyone know the usefulness of this connection method? Is there a benefit over the existing named connection string?

Thank you Lance. Many years ago I tried going the ADO.NET way and did not get anywhere. That is one of the reasons I moved to alpha. Maybe now it will be easier for me to understand.

This is pure conjecture here, but I'm wondering if this is related to what Alpha did for the new help file reader -- I have not looked into this at all, but as I watched it I wondered what and how they were doing this, and surmise that a database must be involved somehow. It's impressive enough to make me want to learn how to do that. And with the .NET capabilities now....

Unless things have changed, I'm fairly certain there are significant performance gains using OLEDB connections.
If this connection is in fact using OLEDB, there may be significant performance gains.

I came across this information years ago, and (ironically) recently posted info (possibly related) regarding this: http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...ve-Link-Tables

According to what I had read: In ASP, and Visual Basic, the "threading model" can be problematic when using standard ODBC connections..... So when I hear people talking about performance issues when connecting to Access and SQL back ends with a5, I began to wonder whether there is a common problem which affects a5 too.

It's all about the "framework." (I suppose an "a5-induced" hard drive crash is now in order?)

If using SQL Server, which I am, would using the newly available ADO.NET connection string be the recommended practice? I'm early in my development and would not be a problem to convert my existing grids. Thanks.

My gut feeling is at worst, it's every bit as good, and likely superior. (from what I had read years ago) More info (and a link) at the bottom of this thread (post #4) might be of help: http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...hlight=ole+jet

This is probably a question that is best answered by Alpha.....

Thanks Robert...I went ahead and changed my connection string using the new ADO.NET and everything seems to be working normally (I'm still on a local server). I doubt the performance of my intranet will be noticeably affected either way, but it's nice to know the preferred methods, especially if future changes may dictate it.

I've done some benchmarking with SQL Server 2012. Using the SQLSERVER connection type that I've been using all along I have a report that pulls 34000 records and the preview takes 12 seconds. Using a connection type of ADONET and specifying System.Data.SqlCleint provider or the System.Data.OLEDB driver using the either the native SQL 2012 client or the SQLOLEDB client the report takes 17 seconds. For performance right now it appears that using the Alpha SQL Server connection type is still much more efficient.

As I said, a question best left to Alpha.....

Years ago, there was definitely a performance & data delivery issue when using ODBC DSN connections with ASP and .MDB's largely due to the threading model of Visual Basic and how IIS dealt with both data and web pages in a multi-user environment when using ODBC. ~Beyond that, I don't know. What I am wondering is: Could a similar issue exist on a server running both SQL and the Alpha Web Server? (on the same box)

Selwyn... I'm sure we'd all appreciate some feedback on this new connection option!
