Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Grid Search Part not working

I am working on an application that has a grid with a search part. The grid records can be over 17000. The search part has 2 dropdownlist boxes and 4 textboxes for searching. The grid search works fine in working preview.

In production, an a5w page has a button on it that when clicked opens another a5w page with the grid. The grid works fine with paging. At first I was getting the 414 error (url too long use method=Post) when I would do a search using any one or more search fields. When I have method=get in either a5w page, the url will be long and not show the search result. When I put method=post in either a5w page, at the end of the search the fields and or dropdowns are cleared and the result is not correct.

I am not able to get the search part to work at all. Has anyone else had this problem. Please help!!!!

    Hello Herbert,

Without something to look at, it'll be nearly impossible to say for sure. All we can do is to guess. However, I would make sure all the pages have been published. If you still have the problem, here's my guess. I'd break the search part down and try it one field at a time, one dropdown list at a time. Check your java script. You may be using a script that is not quite the right one for the task at hand. By taking that approach, my other guess is you'll find the problem.

I found this in a thread a couple of threads away:

Well, it seems that it is a problem with 3914.. when I went back to 3903 (I think that's the one), it works fine. Guess its a "pre-release" bug.

    What build are you using?

Under the Alpha help dropdown, it is at Version 11, build 2549 and the System Addins is at build 3903. I will do as you suggested and let you know what happens.

      Thanks

Re: Grid Search Part not working

I have removed all search fields except one dropdownbox and it still does not work. Here is more information.
The database is MySQL and the data is from a view I created in the database. The connection is a secured https. The grid and search part work fine in the Working Preview but once I put it in a a5w page on the production server it does not work. When I make a selection and click on the Search button, it acts like it is doing something but the screen stays as it was before the search.

What else can I give you without giving you access to the secured data?

          Hi Herbert,

I understand your frustration. I've been there many times! The first question: Is the problem in alpha or in the SQL database? Create a table or two to simulate the tables in the SQL. Put some bogus data in it. Change to source of the grids to reflect the new tables. Now try the search. Does the search work? IF not, then we need to know how you created the search part, step by step, click by click. That is the only way your situation can be duplicated.

            Hey Ken

As I was setting up the tables as suggested above I decided to check out another route first. Using the same Grid file, I created a button in the a5w file to open the Grid file as a popup. In doing it, everything works fine including the Search Part. For some reason the Search Part does not work when the Grid is inside a a5w file but works fine if the Grid is opened by itself as a popup.

Thanks Ken for all your help and advise.

              Herb,

I'm glad you got it working. I find that quite often, even tough someone's suggestion isn't quite 'right on', it triggers a thought which solves the problem. Like any other software, A5 has it's share of idiosyncrasies. Is it supposed to act that way? is it a bug? Who knows. Alpha has come a long, long way even since v1. There are more options, things to do, etc. It's got to be almost impossible for the Alpha crew to track everything down with so many ways to apply how we want it layed out. Overall, the Alpha crew does a remarkable job in cranking out such a great, fun product.
