Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

500 Internal Server Error --- How to troubleshoot???

I'm getting really frustrated with A5. Seems every time I turn around, I am getting random Internal Server Errors (XHTTPRequest Error) or some other similar error.

I've been working on a dialog for several hours... its been working fine each step when using WORKING PREVIEW. Then I decided to try Live Preview and wham, the above error.

I'm not understanding WHY it works in WORKING PREVIEW but does not work in LIVE PREVIEW.

Anyway, my question is, how do I start troubleshooting this?????

    I'm running Build 3903.

I feel like I'm spending more time troubleshooting issues than I am building...

    Thanks,
    Chris

Not exactly looking for help with my particular problem, just looking for pointers...

ironically, I narrowed this down to data binding... if I remove the action to bind controls to a datasource, it works fine...

I've narrowed this down further to the data binding not liking some of the tables that are table bound, but i don't know why... just narrating I guess because I figure maybe someone else will eventually get this error.. but again, it would be nice to know what the problem is instead of some basic error.

Turn on the xbasic error log in the a5 WAS. that will narrow it down for you.

Re: 500 Internal Server Error --- How to troubleshoot???

A 500 Internal Server Error simply indicates that something (anything) went wrong when executing your application code. On its own, it is no more helpful than "it didn't work".

Fortunately, the server will give a detailed error message along with each 500 error. The message will be sent back to be displayed in the browser, and logged in the error log if logging is enabled.

While you are developing, it is usually easiest to turn off IE's "friendly errors" so that the full error message will be displayed as you test.

It is still also a very good idea to turn on the logging so that errors received by other users are also recorded, enabling you to review them later when someone just tells you "it didn't work" and you need more details to investigate what may have happened. The log is a simple text file which you can open in any application that handles .txt files (e.g. notepad).

Re: 500 Internal Server Error --- How to troubleshoot???

I did the xbasic error log, and this is all its telling me:

            Thread: AppServerWorker2
            Line: 368 if .not. ParseBody()
            command: property_recurse_assign(Variables,ParsedMimeDoc.Variables)
An unhandled exception (c0000005) was generated.
            Execution Stack:
            0#1 evaluate_shared_private(
            0#18 OOhttpdServerClientMIME(ptemp,"AppServerMain")
            0#368 if .not.self.ParseBody()

            No other detailed information.

In my case, I have determined that it doesn't like 2 tables, that only have 3 columns (int, varchar, and tinyint) with 2 - 3 records in it.. if i remove the table in the fill fields on dialog action, its fine... but my issue is, I cannot find a way to figure out what the actual error is...

Re: 500 Internal Server Error --- How to troubleshoot???

That points to an error in the server itself, not your code/component.

Please enable raw HTTP logging to capture the request that is causing this error, then submit that log file along with the error log to [email protected].

Lenny, I submitted the bug, including my project and database files, to see if it helps you any.

                Thanks,

We were able to duplictae Chris' problem using the logs he supplied. This has now been fixed. The fix will be included in the next prerelease.

This is a major reason I am happy I purchased A5! Support is great and I can only hope when I release my software, I can be as responsive!
