Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Yet another Lookup Problem

I'm kind of surprised that no one else has commented on this series of problems I am having, but here goes another one.

I have a grid with a detail for adding/modifying records. When adding/modifying, one of the fields looks up a value and replaces itself with the lookup value and another field at the same time. The first field is called "ActCode" and looks up to a grid (another dbf) and then replaces itself and the second field "Description".

OK. Now can someone tell me how to make "Description" read-only? Once again, easy to do in Desktop. Why such a problem in Server? Yes, you can make the "Description" field a Label, but then the lookup will fail.

Anyone seen this behavior of have a workaround?

    Re: Yet another Lookup Problem

Well, here's a workaround. I set the "Description" field in the detail section to Hidden. So now at least it updates without a user being able to change the field. Not sure if this is what Alpha intended or not.

      Charlie,
      You could leave it as a textbox and set the onfocus JS event to this.blur();
This way it is visible, but it can't be changed.

Thanks. In the meantime I have reported this to Alpha along with several other problems. They should allow fields to be read-only just as in Desktop.

          Charlie,

You can set a field to be a Label, then it becomes read only.

            Hi
            Try this.
            Set the Enable Expression 1=2
            Under Client side properties
            This works for me.

              hello
yes that's the way i did and works well.
if you change it to a label it is read only, then you have to write your own xbasic code to update the backend( i am using mysql) then it will change to the current value
              still remain as label.
enable expression is easy and updating the backend is easier.
              thanks for reading

OK. I'm anxious to see what Alpha says. While I'm happy that Alpha come sout with better and better features, but troubled that some of the basics have been somehow overlooked.

                  Charles,

I'm using MySQL. I have an employees table that also looks up records from other tables (shifts, departments, etc). I got it to work and it was easier than I thought. I posted the solution here. I hope this works for you.
                  Thanks,
