Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Print Report on printer local to server from remote location

    Need some help.
While using a web application, reports will print locally to the browser.
My client has asked if I can make it possible to print to a printer at the office (their A5 server is located in their office) while using the application remotely.
Seems this should be doable, but I am not clear in my mind how this might be done.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Gordon,

I dont know the direct answer but, how would it work if you were to send the report to the office as an attachment and they could print it there?

      Thanks Keith,

I suppose that might be a viable alternative.
Although during the time frame when they would be working remotely, there is no one in the office, so what they are trying to accomplish is to have the reports sitting on the printer waiting for them when they come in on Monday morning.
Thanks for the good suggestion. If I can't find a way to print directly, that might very well be the next best option.

Steve Woods was doing stuff in that area I think, give him a go.

They could share the printer and it should show up in the list of available printers.

              Hi Frank,

The printer is a shared printer on their office LAN.
I just don't know how to write an xbasic function that would print to that printer from whatever browser they happen to be using.

Perhaps I am missing something. When the report runs and the PDF opens just select the shared printer from the list and print the report.

As far as I can tell, the PDF report that pops up when I am running the application on a remote browser does not show anything but printers local to the machine on which the browser is running.

If there is a way to accomplish getting a printer local to the A5 server to show up, that would be a perfect solution.

Re: Print Report on printer local to server from remote location

The shared printer will have to be 'installed' on the local machine. Obviously the network has to be set up so that the local machine can connect to the shared remote printer.

Re: Print Report on printer local to server from remote location

We want to be able to do this from any device, not just PCs with the ability to print to a shared remote printer. Clearly if my client is using a machine that is already set up to print to the office printer, there is no issue.

For example, they are currently using an Ipad to access the program. They want the ability to print at the office from the Ipad. This is what I am trying to accomplish, although the same principle should allow us to print from any remote device, phone, tablet, etc, including any internet connected PC.

It seems to me the solution you are proposing would require some kind of VPN setup in order to work. Of course, they could always use something like "logmein" to run the application on a computer on their local network. However, this is slower, and would require an available machine for remote access.

If they need to do that, I suppose it would be a solution. I am just wondering if there isn't a more direct, easier way to print from the application which is running on a remote machine not connected to their office network.

Re: Print Report on printer local to server from remote location

I knew there was something I was not getting. The part I did not understand is printing from an IPAD. There have been a few discussions here about being able to print to a remote printer from any web connected device but there are protections against that and for a good reason. I don't know of any way beyond windows connected devices. Maybe as Pete suggested Steve Wood knows a way.

PS. someone had suggested a program that monitors a directory and can act on the files when the directory changes ex print, copy, move. I can't find the thread. Maybe that would work.

Thanks very much for the suggestions, Frank.
I will see what I can find along those lines.
I wasn't aware of the protections you are referring to, outside of simply having security on the local network.

Still it seems to me that given the right server side action, I should be able to send an a5 sqlreport from the a5 app server directly to a printer local to that a5 app server. In this case, I'm not trying to originate printing from outside the network. Although I could very well be missing a piece of the big picture here!

                            hello
one way of doing this would be to download logmein, a free copy should be enough, and login to the office computer from anywhere launch the browser and log on to your website and print reports as you need them and they will be printed at the office and waiting for them. ( i am sure pcanywhere should have same thing but i do not use it to comment)
or check out their pro version see if they have more functionality. while this may be a round about way of doing the stuff you wanted, it can done from anywhere you don't have to install the office printer to your local computer.
usually browsers can not control the local printer otherwise people will take control of your printer. horrible i would say.

                              Thanks for the suggestions Govindan.

Actually, the logmein option on the Ipad is not a bad one, as I believe they have an IPad app for their product...

Looks as if we may have to choose that method, as I am not finding anything on having a report print directly from the A5 server...
