Override Dynamic Connection String in DropDown

I have a dynamic connection string ::name::DynamicConnection_myconn.

This dynamic connection string is stored ENCRYPTED in session as:
session.__protected__myconn

Now, I have a dropdown box whose connection is:
::name::DynamicConnection_myconn

I need a way to 'catch' the dropdown before it tries to resolve the connection string so that I can run my decryption.

I have been able to do this in a grid:

OnGridExecute
e.tmpl.cs.ConnectionString=a5_decrypt_string(session.__protected__tenant_db, 'mykey')

However, this above line does not change the value of ::name::DynamicConnection_myconn (obviously).

Is there a way I can override the resolve function?

If in the grid I could do something like:
A5_SetConnectionString("::name::DynamicConnection_myconn",a5_decrypt_string(session.__protected__tenant_db,'mykey')) then I would be fine.

WIth the lack of documentation, I am having a hard time finding a function like this

I'm a bit thick when it comes to understanding what's what, in these cases. I get what you're trying to do... can you give an example of how the connection string changes? Is it the Named Connection that changes (probably not) or the resolved connection string (probably). So you start with a named connection (that would resolve into one string), but then you change what goes into that named connection, assign it to a session var, then use that.

Hi David, sure.

We have an application - this application has its own database. ::name::conn
This application stores ' Products ' to manage.

Each Product has its own database.

All products have identical db structure. (Table A, Table B, Table C) yada yada.

When you log in to the system, you can add a product and its connection string.
You select a product and it's connection string is put into session as session.__protected__myconn

I have a connection named DynamicConnection_myconn.
The grids for managing Table A, B and C all use the DynamicConnection_myconn connection.

This way the grid for table A is able to manage Table A in any product database (based on the current selected product in session).

Now, This all works fine.
However, when I encrypt the session.__protected__myconn variable, obviously the alpha grids / dropdowns have no clue how to properly decrypt it.


I was able to remedy this in the grid on the OnGridExecute event:
e.tmpl.cs.ConnectionString=decryptmyconnection(session.__protected__tenant_db,"myencryptionkey")

However, since dropdown objects have their own connection string i was unsure of where to put the code.

I have found a solution:

However, I am not satisfied with it.
It would be so much easier to call something like:
A5_SetConnectionString("::name::DynamicConnection_tenant_db",decryptmyconnection(session.__protected__tenant_db,"myencryptionkey")) in the OnGridExecute and then this should work for all Lookups, Dropdowns, etc that use the DynamicConnection_tenant_db

For now, my hackish method will work, but it is not the best solution at all.

I am lookin for a more efficient way to do this.
