Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Server-side validation on single field

    I've gone through the various videos on the Wiki, and one touches on server side validation, but doesn't show HOW it was set up.

    Basically, I have a dialog. The first field is an email address. I need it to check if the email address exists already, and if so, display an error, and show a container that was hidden previously. This is for new records.

    If it is an existing record, I only want to validate it if it is changed, but if they change a character and then the same email address is still there, then it shouldn't revalidate it (as it would say the address already exists, which should, since this is an UPDATE operation).

    I set up validation on the field, in properties, to check a database table, which sorta works, but if it is an update, it still says value exists.

    Any pointers???

    Chris

    Do you want to validate the email address from the Dialog Submit? Therefore, using the dialogValidate event?

      Actually, immediately once they tab out of the field... I see the option Immediate Validation (client server/server side) but I don't know where to define which call back for server side. The videos leave that part out.

        I believe the "validate xBasic" setting means "serverside".

          Yes... the Immediate Validation (server-side part) fires off an Ajax Callback to the code in the Validation Xbasic routine. The trick is to get a sure-fire way of determining if you're working on a new record or an existing record.

          Selwyn posted some information about the dialog object keys being set once the dialog is populated with data from a table, but I can't get it to work 100% of the time.

          e.g.

          Code:
          var _myo = DLG1_DlgObj.stateInfo;

          if (_myo.keys.TBLPRODUCTS._key == 'undefined')
          {
          alert('new record');
          }
          else
          {
          var xx = _myo.keys.TBLPRODUCTS._key;
          alert(xx);
          }

            Ok, I'll try that David... I appreciate the example!!

              No... can't get it to work... but... the following does. This is kind of brute force stuff. I'd prefer to use the information in the object itself, but just can't seem to understand it. In your Email field, put this code into place in the Validation XBasic section, and set your Immediate Validation to Client-side and Server-side.

              This code grabs the Id of your record and checks to see if that record exists. If it does then we don't need to do anything... right? 'Cause we're just changing the email address. But, if the Record Id does not exist, then that means we're dealing with a new record and therefore we will go on to check the email address.

              The following code uses my fields, so change those to yours. Hope it makes sense.

              Code:
              dim cn as sql::connection
              dim args as sql::arguments
              dim sqlStmt as c
              dim rs as sql::resultset
              dim sqlStmt as c

              if e.data.ProdId <> "" then
              	'we have data, so let's see if this is an existing record

              	flag = cn.open("::Name::YOURNAMEDCONNECTION","YOURLOGIN","YOURPASSWORD")

              	sqlStmt = "SELECT * FROM tblProducts WHERE ProdId = :argsItem"

              	args.add("argsItem",e.data.ProdId)
              	flag = cn.execute(sqlStmt,args)
              	rs = cn.resultset
              	flag = rs.nextRow()
              	if flag then
              		'we are dealing with an existing record so no need to do anything
              	else
              		'we are dealing with a new record, so let's go validate our other data
              		if e.data.ProdName <> "" then
              			'we have data, so validate the field

              		        flag = cn.open("::Name::YOURNAMEDCONNECTION","YOURLOGIN","YOURPASSWORD")

              			sqlStmt = "SELECT * FROM tblOrders WHERE OrdName = :argsItem"

              			args.add("argsItem",e.data.ProdName)
              			flag = cn.execute(sqlStmt,args)
              			rs = cn.resultset
              			flag = rs.nextRow()
              			if flag then
              				'we found a record in the validation table with the same value, so... no go
              	                    validate_ProdName.hasError = .t.
              			    validate_ProdName.errorText = "ProdName already exists."
              			end if
              		else
              			'no data so nothing to do
              		end if

              	end if
