Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    MySQL Server-side connection: stumped

    I can connect to the MySQL database from an external location. I cannot, however, seem to connect to the MySQL database on the server itself from within the Alpha5 application. Did I setup my AlphaDAO connection string imporperly? I reference the host, the port, and have a user setup that presumably covers all my bases. I don't know, though. I'm new to this sort of thing and am completely stumped as to how to fix my problem. I'm getting this error:

    500 Internal Server Error
    Script Error
    Error:Script:inc_header_setvar.a5w line:13
    prot=if(arr_vars[x].protected,"__protected__","")
    Property is write only
    arr_vars[] not found.

    Alpha Five Application Server/11.0 Build/2600-3909 at ARTFORM Port 80

    Now. I can reproduce this exact error locally if I restrict my database permissions for Alpha 5 to nothing. I get the same error if I deny access to the database completely --- as in, don't permit connections from my IP. The only thing I can figure is that I don't have the permissions setup properly for my website to access the sql database. They're on the same machine, so I'm mostly baffled at this point.

    Re: MySQL Server-side connection: stumped

    Hi Sarah

    In SQL, do you have TCP/IP enabled ?
    Are you using SQL or Windows authentication ?
    What does your connection string look like?
    ex: {A5API='SQLServer',A5DBVersion=2008,Server='myhostname\SQL_SERVER_zzzzz',A5ANSINullPadWarn=Default,Trusted_connection=yes,Database='mydatabasename_db'}

    Lots of possibilities so we'll need more details.... Dave

      Re: MySQL Server-side connection: stumped

      TCP/IP is enabled. I created an exception in Windows Firewall for it. The server is a Windows Web Server 2008.
      I'm not sure what you mean by Windows vs SQL authentication. Port 3306 is open on the server and I've got MySQL setup to only accept connections from specific locations/IPs. User name & passwords setup for those.

      I'm using a MySQL connection string (MySQL server): {A5API=MySQL,Server='my_server',Port='3306',UserName='afhp',Password='the_password',Database='afhp'}

        It's working now! I don't know why. Messed around with my publishing settings while emailing the server support team --- probably too much. Thanks for the assistance! I didn't get far, but I did try this and I'll admit that I feel a little dumb if this is seriously what I was doing wrong: http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...l=1#post600452
