Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Ulink Help

Hi Guys, i have hit yet another brick wall and am feeling alittle out of my depth.

What i want to do is have a way of when my staff login to the system they are able to view a Grid or grids of information that is relivent only to them.

For example sally logs in and is then able to view her employee file, messages grid etc.

Is this possible and if so where do i start.
Thanks in advance. I have done a little bit of playing with the Ulink field but all instructions i can find seem to be somewhat incorrect for v11

    Re: Ulink Help

I am currently doing the same thing. You can do this by assigning an unique number to each employee. First enable the Ulink field in your security settings if you have not already done so, then assign a session variable to that field, this settings is right below the checkbox to enable the ulink field, I used "sv_salesrep_id" which will be used in the example below. The session variable will be automatically created on user sign in. You must enter the unique employee number for the ulink field under security settings -> users and groups.

In the grid you want to filter you need to define an argument for the session variable:
    ulink_session_var_to_argument.PNG

Then you need to use that argument in the grid filter:
    Code:
    Salesrep_Num=:Salesrep_ID
The table or view in your grid must have a employee number to filter by, in my case that is the "Salesrep_Num" field.

      Thanks Luke.
I think ill need to read through that a few times..
I currently have all staff set up with a auto field called Employee ID.
I assume i can use this in the same way you are using the sales rep ID.

        Re: Ulink Help

Yup, it should work the same way. I am manually entering a ulink number for each employee because the company already has employee ID's assigned to salreps in there legacy system. This may help clear up any confusion...

            Re: Ulink Help

Re: The Total Training video #42 makes mention of not using the Ulink, so that you can migrate to Microsoft IIS server in the future.
My understanding is that the Ulink is the external identifier field, if I'm incorrect please correct me.

Would you be able to accomplish your goals without the Ulink.
Is it a concern that by using the Ulink, you may not be able to use the IIS server in the future? If not concerned, why not.

            Thanks,

Thanks very much to Luke we have been able to sort my issue out.
I'm not to worried at this stage about the future iss support for ulink as this is just an internal project. But if things all work out there maybe a need to find another way of doing this.
Are you aware of anyway of getting the same results by not using the ulink option

                Roland.

Take the advice, but seriously. Internet, Intranet or Extanet whether WAS persists in V12 is the question nobody is taking its final answer has or will. I would not take the gamble and the link that shows Steve read before you make a choice whether or not to use ulink.
