Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Searching A Grid On Calculated Fields

Searching A Grid On Calculated Fields

I have a grid with some calculated fields on it. No biggie there.

Now, I want to search this grid using one of the calculated fields.

    Can this be done?

    If so, how?

Then, what I'm really trying to do is search a grid that has been embedded into a dialog component, using a calculated value from the embedded grid. I know that the new feature pack:

"V11 Feature Packs - Dialog Component - Power Search for Grid using a Dialog Component"

only lets you search the embedded grid on fields in the table that the embedded grid is based on, not any calculated fields that the embedded grid has.

Is there a solution to this issue?

Thanks In advance for any help!

Re: Searching A Grid On Calculated Fields

How are they calculated? In the query or using javascript? I've used fields in my search parts before that were calculated in the grid query. So, if your query is:

SELECT Subtotal, Tax, Subtotal + Tax AS Total
    FROM Orders

(that is a terrible bs of an example...)

Total will be a field you can use in the Search Part of the Grid.

Re: Searching A Grid On Calculated Fields

      Thanks for responding Chris!

First, it may or may not matter but I am using DBF tables.

The fields are being calculated in the query.

You might be able to search on a calculated field this way (I have not tried but I suppose I should), but for sure when you try to use the functionality of the feature pack from above, it does not allow searching on any calculated field from the grid that you are trying to search.

      There's the real problem.

Re: Searching A Grid On Calculated Fields

You could define the calculated field from within the DB itself. A5 will treat it like any other DB field. Within the list of grid fields, include any calc fields that need to be searched, and hide those not to be displayed.

The calculated fields are look-up fields.

Can we do that in the DB?

If we can, how does that get accomplished?

My original post here was erroneous.

            Sorry.

Create a DB view that includes all the text fields you need. The SQL will include inner or left joins as needed and you will no longer need to define the lookups in the grid. I am assuming the grid is readonly. You will need to include these extra text fields in the grid, but could keep them hidden if you wish. i havent tested, but this approach usually works well.

I don't know about DBF's but with SQL if while the calculated field does not display in the available files list - if you key it in manually it still works, good luck with your app. Pete.

Re: Searching A Grid On Calculated Fields

Andy was right. I just put a look-up expression in one of the fields and I got the values I was looking for. AND, I can now search on them.

Now, for some reason, I am not getting all the records that match the search criteria when a search is preformed. Just getting one and sometimes 2 records....wonder what this is all about....

Re: Searching A Grid On Calculated Fields

Al, sounds like your query definition needs checking. The grid can only display what data the DB sends to it.
