Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Desktop to Server Migration Question

I have a functioning desktop app designed in V 11 currently in native dbf. My goal it to move this to my Zebrahost server. Once the database is web accessible, users must be able to add data. Initially, I plan on using every genie and wizard at my disposal for a quick and easy outcome. I will pretty it up as I gain experience.

From my limited knowledge and experience, I anticipate the following course of action:

    1. Zebrahost already has my server active, but I believe I (they?) need to install a SQL server. I am leaning towards MS 2008 Express. Am I understanding this properly in believing I need the SQL Server running in order to keep my data on the server? Unless I've misread a number of posts, it seems as though many have stated that they keep their SQL data locally and update the server. I don't see how this could work with multiple users adding data.

    2. Upsize my database from native dbf to SQL locally. In previous efforts, I ran into issues regarding field name problems going from Access to SQL. I also seem to have issues during the upsize regarding primary keys. Is there a newbie SQL primer that anyone recommends? I just want to avoid pitfalls.

    3. Publish my upsized database to Zebrahost using the Flying Start Genie.

The database will be used by employees, so functionality overrides aesthetics.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Desktop to Server Migration Question

    Hey Kevin,

    1. You'll need SQL Server installed/activated on your server. There is no keeping data locally. You'll have a Connection String / Named Connection to establish a connection between your desktop and your Zebrahost server... that's how you get to your data on SQL Server.

    2. On the Desktop Control Panel, under Tools, you have Database Upsize Genie. You could use this to get your DBF data over into SQL Server.

    3. You can use the Flying Start Genie - after your data in upsized to SQL Server - to create your base grids. This is the Flying Start you get - Alpha will create the Grids, but the data must first be in place. Actually, that isn't quite true, you can run the Flying Start Genie against your DBF files, but since you're moving to SQL Server, might as well do that first, then create the Grids - because then the Grid's data source will be your SQL Server Named Connection.

      One not very related question.

How am I going to manage the sql server later? such as insert table , insert structure field & etc?

Need to have another program or can run from A5 itself??

      Regards

Re: Desktop to Server Migration Question

There are tools available for both SQL Server (SQL Server Management Studio) and MySQL (MySQL Workbench) that come with each of those servers. Many here use Navicat Premium which connects to multiple databases. You sit at your desk performing maintenance on the remote server.
