Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Upload image using a Dialog: possible?

    .
    Hi,
    Is it possible to upload an image using a Dialog component? For example, a user self-registration Dialog where the user inputs his personal information plus uploads an image of himself.

    Regards,
    Felix

    I can't speak confidently on the dialog component, but I know with the Grid component, the record had to exist prior to the upload--i.e. you couldn't upload when inserting the record, which is probably what you''re wanting to do with the dialog component.

      Hi Chris,
      Yes, you are right. What I want is to create using a Dialog2 is a new record with, among other controls, an image.

        Re: Upload image using a Dialog: possible?

        I am trying to do a similar thing.. I am asking customers to answer questions using an image... some times there are multiple images for a single question so you have that 'one to many' relationship.. and so the record existing BEFORE you add the image to the 'many' side is tricky and I have not yet figured it... The dialog might be the answer instead of a grid... You may be able to do it with the grid but the 'standard' approach definitely does not work it will need some 'special' xbasic or Java script work ... anybody solved this? i.e. adding in image to a new record?

          Re: Upload image using a Dialog: possible?

          You can use XBasic to insert the record and then open the dialog with that record number. That way the record exists even though no customer has yet entered and saved their information. I haven't done this with images specifically, but I have done it to address the issue with the user uploading a file.

            Do you have an example of the XBasic code you could post? ... thanks...

              Re: Upload image using a Dialog: possible?

              There's no easy "file upload" action for a dialog you can use (as far as I know), but you could write the file upload yourself to get around that. You'll need to pass information like the file name etc back to the dialog after the upload, probably with session variables. I'm attempting to accomplish something similar with a project I'm working on. It's not done yet, but I'll share my results later if there is interest.

                I asked Alpha about file/image uploads from a Dialog. The response was that it is on their list.

                  Re: Upload image using a Dialog: possible?

                  We are uploading a file in a dialog2. Well we are actually using an embedded html file (.a5w) to create the form for actually specifying the file to upload in the dialog. This uploads the file to the session folder then we are using the After Dialog Validate to transfer the file to the database (currently a .dbf table) and to a storage directory and a html link to the file (in the directory) in a separate filed. Note: we are adding changing the name of the uploaded file to and location and a date/time stamp to the file. Plus we are taking out file name characters that we found to prevent files from being uploaded and stored properly.

                  the code to for the After Dialog Validate is:
                  Code:
                  dim NewFileName as c = strtran(strtran(chrtran(file.filename_parse(session.UploadedFileName, "N") + "Manager_" + e.datasubmitted.st_name + "_" + cdate(date()) + substr(strtran(""+now(),":", "" ), 12, 6) + file.filename_parse(session.UploadedFileName, "E"), ", &'()#", "-______"), "___", "_"), "__", "_")
                  dim LinkFileName as c = file.filename_parse(session.UploadedFileName, "NE")
                  session.filenam = LinkFileName
                  dim FileStorePath as c = "c:\A5Webroot\application\photos" + chr(92)
                  dim LinkFilePath as c = "https://secure.website.com/application/photos/" + NewFileName
                  if session.UploadedFileName <>""
                  	if file.dir_create_recurse(FileStorePath) then
                  		e.dataSubmitted.MGR_PIC = FileStorePath + NewFileName
                  		e.dataSubmitted.photolinkpath = LinkFilePath
                  		file.copy(session.UploadedFileName, FileStorePath + NewFileName)
                  	end if
                  Hope this helps.

                    Re: Upload image using a Dialog: possible?

                    I haven't tried this yet, but I think this might work.

                    Put an embedded grid in a container that hides the grid until the continue(submit) button is pressed.
                    The continue button should save the data entered .

                    I've been doing lots of hiding and unhiding, and I think this will do what you want.
