Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to Add records in a one to many relationship using SQL SERVER 2008?

Is there a sample web application like the alpha sports database using sql server? the sample database on the desktop is very helpful for novices like me, I hope there is a web counterpart. How do we add records in a one to many relationship on the Grid component? I was able to download a video on how to display one to many relationship using the Grid Component, my problem is how to generate a new custom primary key for the Order Header table and enter some records on the order detail table, after clicking the submit button, the primary key will be saved on the header and the also on every detail. Thanks very much!

Jetson - I know you've been told before that you need to do some research before asking questions. The Search facility of this board is an excellent start as is the documentation, esp. the new documentation viewer. If you had done any of that, you would have found out about the new dialog facility and it's repeating section feature.

Thanks Steve, I saw that earlier, but my question was, how to generate a primary key which is NOT auto increment, the example that I have located from google and the alpha wiki does not provide a custom increment of primary key. I want the primary key to be something like Inv101, Inv102, Inv103 etc.

Is there a reason you want to do this? The old way of doing something like this was to have a control record. Or you can always get the Max record and increment it. However, both of those methods are old techniques.

Yap,I will make a custom primary key so that I can copy from other sql databases. I want to deploy an app to 10 locations and continuously merge in a single database, If will do an autoincrement as a primary key, then every location has a primary key that starts with a certain number, if it starts with 1000, then all the locations will have the same primary keys, how would I then merge these into a single .MDF? there is no problem if all the locations are connected to the internet.Problem is, they are not.But if you can teach me how to merge 2 mdf with the same primary keys, I would appreciate it much, but I think it s not possible.
