Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Can I use Xbasic to set a dialog to read only?

    I would like to set a dialog to read only, depending on the security group of the user.
    I know I can do this in a grid by capturing the group to which the user belongs and placing that group in a session variable.
    I can then set this value in a grid:

    e.tmpl.edit.allow_update = .f.

    if I want to. This makes the grid read only.

    Is there an equivalent function on the dialog box?
    I looked in both of the server side events and could not find this feature in the debug watch window. There is an e.tmpl.edit but it does not include the allow_update, allow_delete, or allow_insert that the grid allows.

    Is there any (other) way to achieve what I want? Creating two dialog boxes is not an acceptable option.
    Perhaps this is planned for a future release (hint, hint).

    Thanks.

    Jay - would it suffice to use the enable expression for the controls?

      Re: Can I use Xbasic to set a dialog to read only?

      That would work if I could figure out how to publish server side variables.
      I tried following the instructions with no luck.
      I tried:
      session.group (and also SESSION.GROUP)
      in the Publish section in the Properties, then tried
      SESSION.GROUP = 'Admin'
      in the enable expression on the Submit button, but got a javascript error.
      I tried
      GROUP = 'Admin' which did not give me the javascript error, but that did not tie into the session variable.

      So if I could figure the publishing server variables, I would be set.
      In the mean time, I will look in the videos.
      Thanks for your time, Steve.

        Re: Can I use Xbasic to set a dialog to read only?

        I finally got the publishing of the server variable worked out.
        For some reason SESSION.GROUP would not work, but SESSION. CATEGORY does work.
        Perhaps SESSION.GROUP is a reserved word.
        Who knew?
        Anyway, now I am going to set the controls to disabled if the user is not allowed to change them.
        Thanks, Steve, as always, for your support.

        Now that you have found your porpoise in life with your current application, I hope it not too much of a haddock.

          Take a look at the way Alpha do it with the Calendars basically they have a hidden textbox

          A5EventReadOnly

          And when a calendar is loaded they set the A5EventReadOnly to “yes”

          In each control in the Clientside Properties > Enable Expression = A5EventReadOnly = "no"

          This is how Alpha set it up in the onDialogInitialize

          e.control.A5EventReadOnly = "no"
          if pv.readOnlyCalendarIds = "All" then
          e.control.A5EventReadOnly = "yes"
          end if

          Hope this helps and yes it would be a good idea to have a setting in the e.tmpl

            Re: Can I use Xbasic to set a dialog to read only?

            Jay,

            Published Session Variables do work. E.g.

            1. Dialog Event, onDialogExecute : session.mygroup = "Admin"
            2. Dialog Properties, Published Session Variables : SESSION.MYGROUP
            3. Control Properties, Enable Expression : SESSION.MYGROUP<>"Admin" : This is disable the control.

            I think the problem you're running into is that you're using "GROUP" which seems to be reserved.

            I love the option of being able to pass Session variables around.

            EDIT: Too funny... you already figured it out.

              Andy,
              Thanks. That's a good idea to use a hidden text field.
              I have done that in other areas for other reasons, but I did not think of using that here.

              David,
              I came to the same conclusion that GROUP is a reserved word (see post above).
              I changed it to CATEGORY and it works swimmingly.

                For Cod's Hake, Jay, if you'll stop floundering around and carping, and instead just mullet around a bit you won't get so battered.

                  See what happens when you teach a guy how to fish? Basically his problem was that he was trying to use Group instead of Grouper

                    If you tell a person a joke, they laugh for a day, but if you teach them to be funny, they can laugh for a lifetime.

                    I think it was my Indian butler, Mahatma Coat, that said that.

                        Although this method works well you need to be aware that from a security standpoint it is weak. A couple of clicks with firebug and you have full control of the dialog. Just something to keep in mind for apps that require more security.

                          Peter,
                          You are correct. Maybe the issue is not that Group is a reserved word, but for whatever reason, SESSION.GROUP did not work, while SESSION.CATEGORY did work.

                          Good point, Jim.
                          Just another reason that Alpha should add the same features to the dialog that the grid has.
