Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How can I create an action button to push the action buttons for lots of rows?

Hi all! I've searched and searched all day and can't seem to find exactly what I'm looking for - I've searched the wiki, the forum, the internet, etc. including google and youtube. I must be putting in the wrong wording so I'm coming to you all for help now.

I have an employee training detail grid based on a sql table. I have a few options in adding employee training records to this employee training detail grid. My primary keys are both the employee id and the course id fields. My options right now are:

    1. I can type in individual training records into the employee training detail grid for each person. When I type in the person's employee ID, the row will auto populate with First Name, Last Name, Email, Manager Name and Manager Email from a lookup and fill in action that I put in 'OnBlur'. The information is coming from another grid called Employee Baseline Records (also a sql table which is my main grid in the web project that will house the total hours of eligible training that each person took).

    2. I can do an import (I already created the import button) where I can import a file with many names and then click a button on the row that contains the lookup and fill in action so that the First Name, Last Name, Email, Manager Name and Manager Email will automatically populate for me.

The problem is when I import a lot of records. Right now I can't figure out how I can get the grid to auto populate the First Name, Last Name, Email, Manager Name and Manager Email for all the rows that I just imported. Today I imported a file with 500 records and I really don't want to have to click the action button on each row for 500 people. Any ideas on what I can do?

Please go easy on me and keep in mind that I am a beginner in alpha five and do not have much programming experience other than what I've learned while using alpha five (not much). I appreciate any help!! Thank you!!

I'm not exactly sure what your SQL database setup is, but you can auto-update each record with an insert trigger.

Then you don't need a button on each row - the data will update automatically and you only have to refresh it into Alpha.

In the trigger, you would do something like this:

"if the information in the new record is blank, then select (your data) from the employee baseline records and update the current data with it."

If you don't know how to write a trigger or if you don't know SQL very well, I would be willing to try to help. (Message me or reply to this topic.)

Please note: This is not strictly an Alpha5 solution - it is a SQL solution. You won't actually push all the buttons, but it will get the job done quickly and easily.

Thank you Larry! I am definitely going to look into that too. I know this will come up again and I would really like to find a solution within alpha five first but I will look into this as my backup, for sure! I truly appreciate it!!

        Sue,

To follow up on what Larry said, you didn't say what format your import was importing from and didn't say what flavor of SQL you are using, but I've discovered that it is relatively easy to create a stored procedure to import a csv file directly into a MySQL table. No need to use Alpha to do that. I'm sure Larry can help with that, or if you need an example of a procedure to do that, I can post one.

Hi Pat! My import is an excel file. Since I'm not too familiar with sql I had to ask someone and I was told we use SQL2005 sp4. Thanks for any help you guys can provide!!!
