Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: Layout report - function to return multiple lines

This probably doesn't have anything to do with what Steve is trying to do... BUT just thought I'd tell you something I just found out from Alpha..

I was needing to change the font color on a field in my child layout report based on the value and was unable to do it... so I wrote to Alpha and asked them if it was possible to do 'dynamic' on a layout report. They just wrote back and said that for some unknown reason, that feature had been turned off in layout reports and they will be turning it back on in next pre release. Steve, did you have any dynamic stuff going on in that child report that won't show up? Probably not but when there is a mystery, all knowledge is good, and who knows what effect the 'turn off' of the dynamic stuff would have on confusing a linked report .... so I'm sharing...

Re: Layout report - function to return multiple lines

Well, that's helpful Carol. While my issue has nothing to do with dynamic properties, your note tells me maybe they're looking at this a little further. I hope for some solution soon and while it'll probably be in a pre-release I may have to run that to deliver what I've promised.

Among the things I thought I could to with a UDF is build an HTML table and "embed" that in a cell in place of the problem I'm having with one of my linked reports. But, even that showed every HTML tag in the table as well -- just a string of characters.

I do hope this matures, and soon. It holds so much promise and offers us a great alternative to hand-coding such a report.

Re: Layout report - function to return multiple lines

Steve, I just figured out why my linked reports worked in Design/Preview but not once I published them. I use a Dynamic Connection string because I have Multi Tenants with multiple back end databases. The parent report is getting the proper data using the Dynamic Connection string, but the child linked report is reverting to my default connection string. The child linked report is also set to use the dynamic connection. When I do a Design/Preview of any report, it always uses my default connection string because it's not 'live'. So my parent and linked report match up in Design/Preview and I think it's all working. But once published and I log on as a tenant, I get the proper parent report for that tenant, but no child records match so it appears that the linked report is just not showing up. I tested this by copying my default db to a tenant, then went and some changed data in the default db, but NOT in the copied tenant db. When I log on as that test tenant, the child report does show up because it finds the matching links, but the data in the child report is from my default db and NOT the tenant db.

Are you using dynamic connections? I have sent a bug report to Alpha about this.

Re: Layout report - function to return multiple lines

No, multi-tenant, but single connection string. I see the pre-release just came out with the dynamic properties fixed, but no mention of anything else. When I have time (won't be today) I'll install the pre-release and pray that some of these other matters are also handled. If there's some way to handle an expression that returns multiple lines of result then I'll be in business, whether I can get all linked reports working or not.

Andy Meer just sent me an example of two child linked reports in a group footer to help reassure this can be done. I'll figure it out eventually.

Even though the pre release came out with the dynamic field properties fixed, I'm going to wait to see if they fix the issue with the dynamic connection. THAT'S my main issue with linked reports. Can't use them unless they fix that. While they are addressing that, have you told them of your issues, Steve?
