Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Initial Value

    Can you set a intial value of a field from another field that is not a session variable? For example, I have an id field that has numbers 1,2,3,4.... in one grid, I want to set the intial value of a field in a second grid to the same value as the id field in the first (one) grid. Can this be done?

    Re: Intial Value

    You could use Window variables. In whatever you're using to open the 2nd grid (e.g. a Button, Action Javascript) you could put some Inline Javascript before it and use the .getValue method.

    E.g. window['id1'] = {grid.Object}.getValue(part,name,[row - omit for Search and Detail View part]);

    Then, in the 2nd Grid, use the Javascript onGridRender event and use the .setValue method

    E.g.

    var id1 = window['id1'];
    {grid.Object}.setValue(part,name,[row - omit for Search and Detail View],id1);

    Another method, playing strictly by Alpha stuff, would be using the technique in video M53... excellent stuff.

      Re: Intial Value

      Thanks, not sure this is exactly what I am looking for, let me see if I can explain what I am trying to do more. I have a parent grid that has a linked grid. In the linked grid I am going to have a file upload action. When the user uploads the file I want to write an id value (that comes from the parent grid) into the linked grid. This id value will tie who the document belongs to, for example, if Jane from the parent grid with the id of 1 uploads a file then the linked grid will have that value '1' written to its id field. A one to many relationship.

        Re: Intial Value

        Let me add some more that I left out. The parent grid id field is not tied to Jane, but to what Jane might own. For example, the parent grid might have dinner plate, breakfast plate, spoon, fork, knife, etc. So each of these objects in the parent grid as a number id and the linked grid is where Jane would upload the file and needs the id from dinner plate written in the linked grid as '1'. It also needs to be able to change, for example if Jane clicks on breakfast plate in the parent grid and uploads a file, then '2' needs to be written in the linked grid id field.

          Re: Intial Value

          Hey Steven,

          Is your linked grid open and displayed with your parent grid? Or do you click on "plate" and your linked grid opens? Or is the Row Expander Linked Grid stuff. There are so many ways to get a linked grid that we all have to be really specific now. How your linked grid opens may determine the best way to get this done. Overall, though, you'll be setting a window variable on the parent grid and then grabbing that window variable when you starting working with the linked grid.

            Re: Intial Value

            The linked grid is going to open with the parent grid. I want the linked grid to be a document repository that holds information about each document and shows an icon for each document that the user can click on to open or download the document.

              Re: Intial Value

              Sounds like you need to set the linked grid inside the parent's row expander.

                David,
                Can you clarify where you put the code. Also what do you mean in the code where you say part,name,[row - omit for Search and Detail View part]. Also is this [row - omit for Search and Detail View part] in the code necessary?

                  Re: Initial Value

                  Steven, what is the Link between the Parent Grid and the Linked Grid? It's kinda like a shopping cart... you have a list of items, a user clicks on an item and it gets added to the Linked Grid, where that user can then upload an image for that item. But the definition for a Linked Grid requires a Parent field linked to a Child field... what's that in your case?

                    Re: Initial Value

                    Under Define Linked Content, I have ID field (parent) to MID (child). Is that what you are talking about?

                      Can you post a screen shot of your parent grid and linked grid? Sometimes these things are a little tough to see.

                        Sorry still trying to get use to linked grids. Do you just want a screen shot of the 'Define Linked Content'? Thanks for your help!

                              Hey Steven,

                              Still trying on this one... your image is of a parent grid with names. The linked grid has items, in this case a plate that Brad owns.

                              The parent grid is showing Rec. # 1, Row # 1. Is this the number you want to feed into your linked grid? Or is there a hidden field in the parent grid?

                              Your earlier post says...

                              For example, the parent grid might have dinner plate, breakfast plate, spoon, fork, knife, etc. So each of these objects in the parent grid as a number id
                              But your image doesn't look like this. The Parent grid is holding names, not objects. The Linked grid is holding objects. Unless... there's another grid in there that opens up once the Upload button is pressed.

                              The image looks like a one to many relationship where Brad owns a number of objects.

                              Sorry... I'm still missing something.
