Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Initial Value

Yes, I miswrote it before, so Brad owns a number of objects. So in the parent grid (Brad) the number in the ID field I want to write that number to MID in the linked grid whenever Brad adds a document. The second person with ID 2 would need to write 2 to MID in the child grid when a document is added. I just dont know how to get it to write the corresponding number to the MID field in the child grid.

      Re: Initial Value

      Hey Steven,

Is this what you want to do? Attached is an image, showing a parent grid and a linked child grid. The first row of the parent grid is selected and the linked child grid is showing that Brad owns two objects.

Brad's Id is 1, and that Id is shown in the Linked Child grid (under CustId). The ItemId is a unique number referring to the number of the object belonging to ID 1 (Brad). There could be 20 Objects in the Linked Child grid... for Brad... all having the CustId of 1, and having an Item # of 1 to 20.

        Re: Initial Value

Yes that is what I want to do, so in your example how did you write the custid from the parent grid to the itemid of the child grid? That should solve my issue.

          Re: Initial Value

          Hey Steven,

What you have is a one to many relationship between the Owners (Brad) and the Objects they own. You already have that relationship established because of the link between your Parent Grid and your Child Grid. You don't need to do anything else. Any new record you start entering into your child grid automatically is owned by whatever Parent grid record is currently selected.

You currently have your parent Id and Child MID fields hidden. If you unhide those fields and start entering data you'll see what's going on.

My ItemId is a field in my Child table. My Child table is named tblCustItems (not that it matters). Here's is the layout for the Keys into this table.

CustId : Primary Key : This field is automatically filled in by Alpha because of the link between the Parent and Child grids
ItemId : Primary Key : Auto Increment : This field is automatically filled in by MySQL because it is an auto-increment field... I don't have to worry about it. It's here because each record has to have a unique key.

So... every time I enter a new record into the Child Grid, the CustId field is automatically picked up from the Parent Grid. And when I save that Child record, MySQL automatically fills in the ItemId.

          How does that sound?

Oh that sounds great, sorry to waste your to time with this, should have tested it more. I just thought this had to be figured out before I proceeded with development. Thanks so much for your help!
