Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Mobile development ?

I know that v11 currently has some amount of mobile functionality built-in (eg stylesheets).
I am also aware that the Alpha 5 team is working hard on the mobile development aspects of Alpha Five.

In terms of mobile development, what does the current release of v11 lack?
Can I comfortably do anything productive for mobile devices at this time?

Need to know what is possible at this time.

    Re: Mobile development ?

I'm building an app right now that is designed with the iPad first in mind, but accommodating other devices as well. Our opinion and that of the users (we've rolled it out for a couple groups so far) is that the app looks and works better on the iPad than any other device, but we're very pleased with it on everything else too. And the work to make it multi-platform has been minimal - mostly minding CSS and design rules.

There are some things I'd like to see yet: the ability to take a photo with the iPad and have it immediately available for linking to a database record -- that sort of thing. I'm betting that whatever comes along next on this point or others will be even more than I could have hoped for.

One of the little cool things: we've given users a bluetooth microphone with connect to the iPad and it's voice recognition. User just clicks into the text field and starts talking. Wonderful, neat, useful stuff.

If you're waiting on something, tell me/us what that is. Otherwise, no need to delay -- A5 is terrific on mobile.

Thank you Steve, that is good to know.
I will then begin to explore what v11 offers for mobile development.

Another way, depending upon your target audience, it to use what A5 was designed to run on ... Windows :)

I have numerous iOS devices, including the iPad 2, and really enjoy them. But I have found that for my one particular app, where the ability to add images and then print reports is paramount, the "easiest" way to get this functionality, now, is to use a tablet that runs Windows. I am now using an Acer Iconia W500 tablet running Win 7 Home Premium and the latest Firefox. I can take a pic with the built in cam, add it to a record and then wirelessly print the report to my HP P100w laser printer. Works and looks exactly the way it does on the laptop/desktop. Sure, it's not as "cool" or as "sexy" as the iPad, but it's cheaper and I can actually get some work done on it ... including the "real" MS Office 2010 and CorelDRAW X5.

Never thought I say this (being a dyed in the wool Macaholic going all the way back to '84) but depending upon the final specs and pricing, I will be lining up to buy the MS Surface (the real one) when it becomes available :)
        Cheers!
