Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5W Page Layout

    I just posted in the Features Wishlist, which BTW, has been greatly improved and updated, a wish for an improved A5W page layout editor which would allow for better WYSIWYG layout of components, text, graphics, etc. I believe that this is one of the great failings of Alpha and prohibits the non-coding individual from producing truly great websites.

    Anyway, and until this is addressed, does anyone have a template or code that will allow me to place two grids on a page (non-related) side-by-side? Or does someone have a program which helps them write the HTML code which can then be placed back into Alpha?

    Thanks!

    Re: A5W Page Layout

    Hi Charlie,

    I am more of a techie by nature and my design skills are sorely lacking! I have always wonder how to create amazing looking websites.

    I quickly came to the realization that good design is a skill you can pay for. What I did was simply use a template you can purchase. For about $60 bucks you can purchase the code to a beautiful looking website and the customize it to your needs. All you need to do is simply import the html code and images into Alpha and voila you have a great looking website that you can start to customize. Start by changing the text and images to your needs, and then plop a grid in as well and you can end up with a great looking page.

    I am not saying you don't have to do a bit of coding html wise to get things all merged up, but trying to do it from scratch is pretty hard and there are a ton of great templates out there.

    Personally I use this site: http://www.quackit.com/website_templ..._templates.cfm

    For about 60 to 90 dollars you can download the html and photos of the template. You don't get exclusive use to it, but who cares? There are 7 billion websites out there and the chances of someone coming across yours again is pretty small.

    I in no way get any endorsement from the site, I just like to use it and there are some phenomenal looking sites out there.

    One watchout if you decide to go down that route - check the type of site, because if it has a lot of java or flash you need to import those files as well. So sometimes its easiest to get just a simple plain html version.

    My two cents

    Cheers

    Scott

      Or get Artisteer for 49.95 and create as many as you like ... for Alpha sites, you don't need the CMS options (Custom Values is nice, but not necessary)

        In the html body area you need code that looks like this

        Code:
        <table>
        <tr>
        <td>--component1 info--</td><td>--component2 info--</td>
        </tr>
        </table>

          Charlie,

          Is there a reason why you cannot embed your grids in a dialog2 component - it allows you to embed multiple grids side-by-side. I have embedded two rows of six grids each in a dialog that I opened as a pane in a Tabbed UI.

              Alpha provides a few templates that allow you to build basic 2- and 3-column layouts. Simply
              • Go to New > A5W page > Create page from template (icon) > Choose "double page 2 column liquid layout"
              • Save your page
              • The page opens in the HTML editor.
              • Select the WYSIWYG tab (if it's not already selected).
              • Double-click in the Column 1 area. It should now be outlined with a thick, hashed border.
              • Press ctrl-A to 'select all'. All text in the first column (and only the first column) should now be selected.
              • Press the Insert Component button to place your first component.
              • Repeat the previous 3 steps for column 2.
              • Save and test.

              A couple of pointers:
              1. Looking in the Source tab, your components should appear between the <!-- Column 1/2 start --> and <!-- Column 1/2 end --> comment tags.
              2. Your components might get placed within <h1> tags. Remove those tags via the Source tab to avoid styling your components with a unsightly bold heading style.

              Though Al Buchholz's solution works, it gives web designers headaches to see tables used for modern site layout. The prevailing argument is that tables are best meant for displaying tabular data. That said, tables still work today just as it did in 1996.

                Thanks Mark. I didn't know about this. I'll certainly give it a try.

                  Yeah, what gives me headaches is new more complicated stuff that doesn't work as well as old simple stuff. It also makes it the fun part of our job to differentiate between what works and what is 'fashionable (at least for today)'
