Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Value of custom field

    Does anybody know how I can get the value of a custom field?
    var lname = {grid.object}.getValue('G','FIELD',{grid.rowNumber});

    var lname is empty when FILED is of type custom control.
    Thanks

    Re: Value of custom field

    Hey Dietmar,

    You need to make your custom control look like the Alpha 5 controls. Have a look at your custom control under Firefox/Firebug to see what you're missing. I'm not positive that this is the case for all controls, but, let's say you have an Alpha 5 input control and a custom control. My controls are OrderId and OrdName2

    That Alpha 5 control will look like this this when rendered...

    Code:
    <td class="GrGrayGridData" id="GRID1.TD.R1.ORDERID"><input type="number" name="V.R1.ORDERID" class="GrGrayEdit" maxlength="12" size="12" value="0 " step="0.25" max="20" min="-20" style="width: 55px;" id="GRID1.V.R1.ORDERID"></td>
    My Custom Input control, just bare bones will look like this...

    Code:
    <td id="GRID1.TD.R1.ORDNAME2" class="GrGrayGridData">
    <input id="myCustomControl"
    The difference is that the Alpha control has an Id and a Name tag that identify the control as "value" entry - something Alpha can work with. I'm calling these "value" entries because they have a "V" in them. So, I will create my custom control html as...

    Code:
    OrdName2_render = <<%html%
    <input id="{Grid.Componentname}.V.R{Grid.RowNumber}.ORDNAME2" name="V.R{Grid.RowNumber}.ORDNAME2"/>
    %html%
    This gives my custom control the "value" entry for an id and a name tag that Alpha requires for it's methods to work with the rendered code. A getValue method can now find what it's looking for.

      Re: Value of custom field

      Once again David, thanks a lot

      This is what I do in my custom control to make it look like a "label":

      html = "<span id={Grid.Componentname}.V.R{Grid.RowNumber}.FELD1 name=V.R{Grid.RowNumber}.FELD1>" + VTZahl + "</span>"
      FELD1_render = html
      (VTZahl is a value I calculate berfore using xBasic)

      now A5 can read the value of the custom control field: var val1 = {grid.object}.getValue('G','FELD1',{grid.rowNumber});

      How the hell do you find out stuff like this?
      To the people at Alpha: In my opinion this one needs to be changed or at least pointed out in the documentation of the getValue method (like it is done with range fields)

        Re: Value of custom field

        Hey Dietmar,

        This one was brand new to me... I haven't worked a lot with custom fields. So, I looked at one I was using - a simple input field - and stuck a button on that grid to get it's value. Like you found... nothing. Everything to do with getting at stuff in html is via an id... so I looked at my custom field and a text field under Firebug to see what the differences were. Just changing the id to match the correct format didn't work. The only other tag was name, so I added that and all was good.

        As far as I'm concerned, Alpha follows their set of rules for rendering. What's wonderful is that we get to tap into that. It was great to find that the placeholders were honoured inside the custom control definition. I wouldn't change the way this control behaves... it's completely open. Documented more... ok, but you have all the other controls that you can customize so much, then the custom control that is a blank slate... excellent.

          Re: Value of custom field

          David,
          Another aspect: As soon as I hide the custom field (as it is irrelevant to the user) I cannot read the value any more. Always get an empty result.
          Any idea?

            Re: Value of custom field

            I found a workaround in the meantime:
            setting the font-size of the column to 0px looks like an acceptable solution.

              Re: Value of custom field

              Hiding the control using the Hide checkbox property causes the control to not render at all.

              So... now we need a bit more info. You've got this custom control, you need to read values from it, but you're hiding it. What are you doing with it and how is it getting it's values?

                Re: Value of custom field

                Values for hidden fields (normal fields at least) are still available in hidden input tags:
                <input type="hidden" name="V.R1.APP_S" id="GRID1.V.R1.APP_S" value="779" />
                Are custom fields different? (I haven't tested...)

                  Re: Value of custom field

                  Yikes... they are there... never saw them, so I thought they didn't render. I found my hidden field code inside another field - never even dreamed of looking for it nested inside something else. Thanks Andy... and yes... it's the same for custom fields.

                    Re: Value of custom field

                    Something must be different for custom fields. The one I use contains simple values like 1, 2, 5 etc.
                    var val1 = {grid.object}.getValue('G','FELD1',{grid.rowNumber}); is only working as long as the custom field is NOT hidden. When hidden it returns nothing.

                      You could try using the Get Value Single function (see http://wiki.alphasoftware.com/Gettin...utes+Core.JS):

                      $gvs('{Grid.Componentname}.V.R{Grid.RowNumber}.FELD1');

                        didn't work as well with my custom field.
                        Thanks for the suggestions, but I can live with the 0px-workaround.

                          Re: Value of custom field

                          Or just do this:
                          myFieldVal = $('{Grid.Componentname}.V.R{Grid.RowNumber}.FELD1').value;
                          alert(myFieldVal);

                          If the hidden input field is in your page source, this will get the value for you.
