Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Security question - is it possible to bypass using active links ?

I'm in the midst of setting up SQL tables for security and am trying to figure out if there's a way to not use the "Active Link" method ?

I'd prefer pointing the security framework directly to the SQL database instead of the active link solution with dbfs in the middle

I've searched every setting I can find and do not see anywhere Alpha exposes the connection between the security tables and the security framework. Am I just not seeing it? Is this possible ?

    Thanks, Dave

    Hi David

Yes it is, Alpha bought out a "how to" guide a while ago that covers this. Available via the wiki click here

      Glen,

David already knows that. He is asking to do it without the active-link tables.

So.... is it possible to not use the active link method and use a standard SQL connection instead?

I have hunted high and low trying to figure out where this is set in the product and am coming up empty. My current guess is it isn't meant to be changed since the entire framework is tied to it.... but.... if it can be changed I sure would like to give it a shot

            Dave

I hate to say it can't be done because every time I say that I get shot down. But, if you don't use Alpha's security tables, active-link or otherwise, it won't work because that's how Alpha determines users & groups. So you can't do it, or at least not and still have access to Alpha's built in methods. Of course now that I've made that bold pronouncement watch me be proved wrong.

yep..... I've come to the conclusion the active links are the only way to employ SQL.
I probably won't be the one to prove you wrong.... even if I did find a way to do it at this point, I would be concerned about future compatibility when new releases/versions come out.

thanks for the chuckle Glen ! been there done that

Re: Security question - is it possible to bypass using active links ?

The security is designed to only use Active Link tables when using SQL tables. However, if the SQL tables follow the suggested structures, the Active Link tables are not actually used. Instead, the security gets the field map and connection data from the Active Link definition and makes a direct connection to the SQL tables.

Hi Jerry.... yep I understood that from the get-go. Was just looking to set this up without the active link definition and understand it can't be done that way. Alpha's security framework is great and I have the active connections working fine for one app/project (I have 8 more to do which prompted me to look for a different method - no biggie tho)
