Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

SQL Express to SQL Web version upgrade

Tonight (I think) I'm going to upgrade my VPS server install of SQL Express to SQL Web version. Haven't done this before, and probably have my own 7 minutes of terror, so thought I'd ask if anyone here has done this, has advice, pointers, whatever to help this go well.

    Thanks
    -Steve

Hope your chute opens. I was not sure what SQL Web version meant, is it as described here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_SQL_Database?

      no support http://www.w3.org/TR/webdatabase/

I think you mean from Express to MSSQLSERVER WEB 2008 RC2/2012 if so this should not be a problem. Safeguard rule dump the db by sql line statement.

Sorry - didn't have any idea my terminology would cause confusion, but appreciate both notes so far. It's described here:

        http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc645993.aspx

Right now it looks like a straight upgrade. Eric - please tell me what you mean by Safeguard rule dump the db by sql line statement. Are you saying a standard backup conducted through SQL Server Management Studio is not sufficient?

Depending if you stay on same db version level then the Studio backup is ok. In case of upgrade the internal schema of Sqlserver is changed that is allways a risk.
so the sql line statement dump is a extra safety rule in case you can't restore the backup or at least make 2 backups before.....

Well, it seemed to go just fine. Took about 10 minutes and that's just because I was extra cautious. I do wish for some confirmation message that says "You have successfully upgraded your edition..." or something like that.

Thing I hate about computers though is not knowing what you're not seeing..... A couple days of user exercise of the site will finally put me at ease on this one.

Re: SQL Express to SQL Web version upgrade

                Well, I am wondering:

Everything seems fine, but a report that's run regularly -- 31 page PDF tonight but varies a bit -- now takes about 8 times as long to show up in the browser as before.

Prior to the upgrade, a call for the report would put the CPU usage on the server's task manager right at the top for about 30 seconds, then drop it right back down and deliver the report.

Post upgrade, much less CPU is shown being used --- it never nails it to the top -- but I'd rather have that then then 3 minute wait for the 31 page report.

I know the Task Manager CPU usage isn't the know-all perfect tool for analysis, but it's what I most readily see different when trying to figure out why so slow.

I've tried both the Amunyi and XLS drivers with no difference, and really don't know what else to do.
