Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How do I get data from a Grid into a Dialog ????

I'm new to AlphaFive and I am trying to accomplish this:
    - The user must select a project in a list (GRID), and then I want to fill the fields in a Dialog.
    - The dialog holds fields for the project table, but als (in a tabbed dialog) for milestones in the project, documents in the project en contacts....
I tried and tried, but I can't get this done....
Where do I start. Do I push the values from the grid, or must I pull them from the Dialog?
    What event(s) do I use and what method(s) ????

I managed to have two Grids that link well.
But this is not the layout I want and I can't get panes with the related tables filled.....

    Please help!!!

      Thanks David,

Yes, this is almost what I am looking for. The dialog gets its values when opening from the grid. Thats good.
But I want the dialog to be on screen alsways, so closing and opening it again is not the solution I had in mind.....
Do I have to forget this idea or is there a possibility to realize that behaviour?

There are unlimited possibilities. Study some of the videos to get a better idea on what's what.

          Richard,

I think you're right about the unlimited possibilities.
But that's part of the problem. There are almost unlimited videos too.....
I've seen about 50 video's now... and still no clue on how to get things done the way I want it......

Yes. Learning a new platform is challenging, esp. web platforms. It takes time to get up and running.

              Please watch this video: https://secure.logmein.com/f?00_-7YD...lYbrSRynIUgPgG

(You'll have to download the video to watch it.)

Note that this was built off the concepts shown in Alpha Video D58 - Part 1, but I used a linked grid instead of a row expander.

Sample files used are in this zip file: test.zip

                THANK YOU Jeff Benson!!!

Your video helped me (beginner Alpha 5 user) solve my problem after 4+ hours of searching the Alpha Docs and watching many, many Alpha videos!

                Excellent work :)

Re: How do I get data from a Grid into a Dialog ????

                        Thanks Jeff and Mark

D57 is great and I have gone thru the videos a couple of times. I also found your linked video very usefull Jeff. I still need assistance tho. My situation is quite different and I have attached an image to explain the issue I'm having:

                        Image1.jpg

The image shows a dialog containing a grid part and an embedded dialog part. The grid is used as an index with searching and sorting options. The embedded dialog is a detail view. When the key field in the grid is clicked the full record is displayed in the detail view on the right. The pop-up detail view is quite straight forward but the user does not want it.
How do I pass the value of the key field in the grid to the SQL select statement to populate the dialog?
Would it be better to use a bound dialog and filter the record or do I use an unbound dialog and populate the fields?

                        Regards
                        Andrew

Hi Andrew. I have just come across this thread as I am having a few problems. Looking at your screenshot I would like to achieve a similar thing. Did you ever work out how to get it sorted? Thanks.
