Populate drop down box with variable passed from Parent Grid

Hi All

I have a grid where I do a search on several elements, i.e. title, forename, surname etc on a customer table, if the customer does not exist I have an option to create a new customer and which time I pass the values from the search part...

I can then populate the fields on my child grid with the exception of title which is a dropdown box ..., I have tried the populatedropdownbox grid method but this appears to have little effect.., is there a way I can set the field value from the parent grid ?

Are you working with the Detail View of the grid as your child grid, or a separate child grid? How are you populating the child grid fields?

Hi, the child grid is a seperate grid that loads when a button is pressed.At the same time I am using Java to get the values from my search field.

On the child grid that is loaded, I have another button to populate the controls again using Java

When you get the values from your search fields, using Javascript, what do you put them in... window variables?
When the child grid is displayed, is it blank? And then you populate using a button? Just trying to get and idea of the flow.

Nonetheless, it seems like you were on the right track with populateDropDownBox... why didn't that work for you.

On my grid I have a Search part and I save a control value from Search into a window var...

window['custname'] = {grid.Object}.getValue('S','CUSTNAME')

Then, in my Child grid (which is opened using a button and Action Javascript), in the Grid Event, onGridRenderComplete, I have...

var droplist = window['custname'];
{grid.Object}.populateDropdownBox('D','CUSTDETAILCITY',1,[droplist],true);

This grabs the value from the window var and replaces the current list in my dropdowncontrol.

What was the problem when you tried to use populateDropdownBox?

The problem I seem to have was that the control wasnt being populated with data..., on my paretn grid I have the code
title = {grid.object}._getValue('S','TITLE');
then on my child grid on a button on the grid I have


{grid.Object}.populateDropdownBox('G','TITLE',1,[title],true);

But nothing appears to happen when I press my button

You're crossing from one component to another so the variable doesn't get passed through. You need to use a global javascript variable using the 'window' namespace. Check out video M43 for more info, but generally what you need to do is... on your parent grid...

window['title'] = {grid.object}.getValue('S','TITLE');

and in your child grid...

var title = window['title']
{grid.Object}.populateDropdownBox('G','TITLE',1,[title],true);

That should do it.

Thanks for the update David, I will give that a try, I am also passing 4 other fields in the same way, which all populate OK using the same method, so not quite sure why this particular one isnt working for me .

If you're passing the other fields in the same manner I'm not sure why they'd be working. I'm not sure how you're opening the child grid... that may have something to do with it... how and where's the child is opened.

Many thanks for your help so far..., I have tried that code but unfortunately my dropdown box is still not populating.. can you perhaps think of any reason this maybe ?

In your child grid, have you tested to make sure the variable title is being set? Put an alert statement in just after you set the title. Otherwise, post your child grid so I can have a look.

In the Grid you attached, I can't see a button with any code - no buttons at all. I thought there might be an Action button, but nothing there either. Attached is an image of the Grid in edit mode.
