Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Hide a Dialog Frame

    I am trying to hide Frame1 on a Dialog when a Button is push and then move the focus to the "Name" field on Frame2. I see there is a property called "Show/hide expression" in the Dialog builder. I do not know how to refer to that property in the "onClick" JavaScript event or how to set a variable or argument in the "Show/hide expression" when the button is clicked. What is the best way to have the Frame hide and then move the focus to the Name field in Frame2.

    Thank you

    Carl

    Do you want to hide just the Frame (the frame name and frame lines) ... or the Frame and all the controls in that Frame?

      I want to hide everything, the Frame and it contents. Sorry for the confusion.

        Very straight forward, using Alpha methods. You don't say if Name in Frame2 is part of a Repeating Section... it doesn't really matter, but let's say it's not. No confusion... just checking... if you hide a container... everything inside gets hidden anyway.

        In your button's onClick Event, add the Action Javascript "Toggle visibility of a container or DIV with animation". You get to choose your animation (Puff is my favourite... but it should act more like a puff of smoke I think... but... I digress). You can select None as well, for the animation. Select DIV as your Object type, and Object Id will be {dialog.ComponentName}.V.R1.FRAME_1. Here... replace "FRAME_1" with your frame Id.

        Next, add another Action Javascript... Inline-Javascript. Your in-line Javascript will be {dialog.Object}.setFocus('NAME2'); which is one of the methods you get to choose from the link. Change "Name2" to whatever your control is.

        That's it. Your button click will hide the Frame and set focus to Name2.

        On a personal comment I think the option to "Toggle visibility of a container or DIV with animation" should work with a Frame when you choose "Container" as your Object type. The Frame "container" is found inside the "Containers" section. However, only a "Container" container is available here. After all... a container is a container. But... as long as it works with a DIV... all is good.

          Thank you! - I can't tell you how much time I have spent on Wiki looking for this. There must be some trick to searching Wiki and I sure don't know it. :-( Thanks again.

            No, there's no trick to the wiki. I love Alpha... the think the people are great... brilliant... the software is closer to magic than anything else... it's poetic... it flows... you can make it stand on it's head if you want to. But that wiki... yikes. I know stuff is in there... I just can't ever get it out... ever.

              I am sort of "new" to Alpha ( and programming). Taking it up as a hobby for retirement. Trying to do some things for my church’s Men's Club. Not doing too bad, I think. Alpha makes 90% of it very easy. It is that last 10 percent that I am spending hours and hours on Wiki. Right now have spent the last 4 hours trying to figure out why a calculated field (whose result is stored in the database) will not immediately read in the form. If I go into the repeating detail section and simply though a field both calculated fields pop right up but will not fill in when the form is originally opened. DRIVING ME NUTS.

                Welcome to Alpha, Carl... and the last 10% that drives everyone nuts... you're certainly not alone... but it is fun, isn't it?

                So you have a DBF table with a calculated field. In a Dialog repeating section?

                  Re: Hide a Dialog Frame

                  I have an web application we intend to use at a Dinner we sponsor at Church. The app has several fields that I use Alpha to calculate the value of the values and then store those values in the SQL database. The application at this stage is trying to document the Ingredients used in each Recipe and the total cost and time to prepare each recipe. I'll try to explain, bear with me: I have a dialog where new Ingredients are added like Vegetables, French Fries, Lemon Pepper Fish Fillet…. In this dialog, among other things, the cost of a "portion" for each Ingredient is calculated and saved in a SQL table. This dialog seems to work just fine displaying all fields, including the calculated one when it is opened. The problem comes in on the Recipe Dialog. This dialog has a Header and a Detail (repeating) section. The header capture the name of Recipe and two calculated fields, one that captures total Preparation Time (minutes) and the Total Cost of the Recipe. These fields are calculated from the "Computed Summary Values" of the "Prep Time" and the "Total Cost" fields in the detail section. (The detail (repeating) Total Cost is a calculated field.) The Detail Repeating section has the Ingredient, Prep Time, Portion Units per Serving and two fields that are displayed from the Ingredient table: Portion Unit (ounce, piece, bag...) and Cost per Portion Unit. The total cost of each ingredient is calculated by multiplying the “Portion Units per Serving” x “Cost per Portion Unit” that is shown from the Ingredient table. The issue is that when you read in an existing recipe the Total Cost in the header is blank as well as Portion Unit, the Cost per Portion Unit, and the Total Cost on the Ingredient in the Detail section. I can make them all show up by tabbing through each row of the detail section. Do I have too many calculated fields? Do I need to duplicated the information I am reading from the Ingredient field to do some of the calculations in the Recipe Detail table (which I understand is bad practice)?

                  I am sorry if this is too long and complicated. I probably did not do a good job a explaining it.

                    Re: Hide a Dialog Frame

                    Hi Carl,

                    Think your problem is one of where your calculations are being performed at, called level/timing or what you want. I would include the calculation on the SQL statement itself. MySQL allows you to create calculated variables on the select statement. Google "MySQL user variables" you will find plenty of examples. I found the one below when I needed a row number to reference a row from 1 a5w page to the next.

                    Code:
                    SELECT @row := @row + 1 as row, id, product_class, category, picture
                    FROM product, (SELECT @row := 0) r
                    Sorry Carl, just come to realize that you are using a dialog and there is no place to use an SQL statement there unless you take ownership of the complete the IO. My suggestion works only for grids.
