Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Dropdown Box Repopulation - Wiki user is frustrated

OK, I am very frustrated. I guess I should say I dont do programming for a living. I am a newbie and I am trying to develop a hobby for retirement to help out at Church. Anyway, I picked Alpha because everything I read said it was easy to use and one could develop Web Apps without coding. (No, I did not expect that to be true, but I had hoped.) I find this no coding true for 90% of the app but that last 10% is driving me nuts. I am spending hours and days looking for answers here and on Wiki and without great success.

The videos are great for new guys like me. The documentation on WIKI seem endless. But how the heck to do find anything???? I send hours every time I go out there and only find what I am looking for 30% of time, if that. Ok, enough ranting

I have a dialog that allows a users to edit or create new records. To edit a record, a dropdown box displays a name of an existing Recipe but brings back the Recipe ID. If a new Recipe is added, the dropdown box that will not show that record (repopulate) unless I close the dialog and reopen it. I was surprised that was not an easy way to may this happen but anyway I found some post here and they talked about a video. That explained how to do this, kind of. Actually there are two videos. The video says that you would actually use a SQL statement to populate your data. So I found and read how to build the SQL statements in xBasic. The video says to use a built in utility function called js_list_to_array to prepare the data. I cant find any documentation on this function. Can anyone point me to it? Or better tell me an easy way to force the dropdown box to repopulate.

Sorry for being so long winded.

    Carl

PS: Cant wait to go figure out the next Function "A5.form.populateSelect - I did find that one. 

Have never watched the video but you can use interactive window to search functions that are not documented but you know are somewhere.

In this case just open interactive window and type js and you find all functions starting js

    numbers = <<%num%
    one
    two
    three
    %num%

    ? js_list_to_array(numbers)
    = "['one','two','three']"

The dialog is an advanced component. If you use a grid with a detail view you can do what you want without coding. Probably 99%. And the 1% would be some code in an embed point.

        Thank you both!

I will look into starting over if working with Grids is easier than Dialog.

Carl, there are some easier methods now for the Dialog (which I personally find easier to work with than Grids, but that's me). Here is some info that may help you if your dialog is mostly complete.

It is except for the some parts that seem to need coding like the dropdown box and having some calculated field show there data. I'll check out the link you provided. Thank you.
