Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Data displayed in a Matrix

    Hi,

I have a training table, fields being Employee Name, Course Code and Completion Date.

I want to display the data in a matrix with Employee Name down the left, Course Codes at the top and Completion Date in the middle, like:

    Course 1 Course 2 Course 3 Course 4 Course 5
    John Smith 24/10/11 16/08/12 NA
    Paul Jones 05/03/12 17/06/11
    Ted Semms 02/02/11 NA 15/04/11 24/11/10

Ideally a grid where the data can be modified in the matrix

Has anyone created a grid that looks like this?

    Cheers
    Craig

That looks to me like a standard, updateable grid. Have you tried that and have a reason you're don't want to use it?

      Hi Steve,

If the Course Codes are determined from data in a Course Code field in a table how do I get the Column Headings to be the data from the table?

          Hey Craig,

Did you ever figure out a way to do this with A5?

Re: Data displayed in a Matrix

There are various ways to do this depending on your database backend, but essentially you want to create a crosstab or pivot table.

With Alpha tables you can do this with the crosstab operation (with some limitations). It will create a new table summarizing data from the source table.

You would set up a crosstab with row group by name, column group by course, and summary field by last (or first) date.

With some xbasic you could propagate the edits / changes back to your master table.

Re: Data displayed in a Matrix

I wouldn't create a cross tab unless you are doing more with the record data??

Basically, name, course 1, course 2, etc would be your field names and the data under that would be your records.

Think of an EXEL spreadsheet. The column headings would be your field names across the top and the data underneath going across from left to right would be your records (data). If a column is blank it is just a null field. Put in the names and a record is created and just wait for the dates of completion for entering.

Re: Data displayed in a Matrix

I think what you want is dynamically changing the column headers.

You can try using the OnGridInitialize / OnGridExecute event (not sure, play around with both see which works).
Write code to load your course names and then use the
                  Code:
e.tmpl.field_info[1].Column.Heading="My New Heading" 'change field 1 to new heading
e.flagMustRecalculateLayoutAndControls=.t. //see next post for link
The bad thing about this is that you may have to change the index anytime you add/remove fields from the grid.
