Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Setting Default value in Grid video M8

    VIDEO-M8
    http://www.ajaxvideotutorials.com/V1...InGridPart.swf
    The Grid allows you to enter new records directly in the Grid part, or in the Detail View part. The Grid builder allows you to specify default values for fields in new records. This can be done by either specifying the field's 'Initial Value' property, or by specifying code in the 'onInitialValueCalculate' event.

    In the case where data entry is done in the Grid Part (as opposed to the Detail View), the issue with the 'onInitialValueCalculate' event (which is a server-side event), is that it is only called once, when the Grid is initially rendered. So, if you enter a new record and then save that record, the event is not called before the next new record is displayed. This video shows how you can save the value of a field that was just entered inside the Grid's 'stateInfo' object, and then use the 'afterRowPopulate' event to retrieve that value and use it as a default in the next new record.

    Note: The .setValue() method is not used to set the value of the field in the new record row because this would cause the new record row to go 'dirty'. Instead we get a pointer to the element and then simply set its value property.

    Tested this code getting script error and does not work anyone see a problem with it? I copied I thought properly from the video?

    Properties TAB > afterrowpopulate:
    if(e.rowNumber == -1 ) {
    var newvalue = this.stateInfo.defaultValue_CustomerId;
    var ele = $('{Grid.ComponentName}.V.R'+e.rowNumber+'.CustomerId')
    ele.value = newvalue;

    Server Side events:
    Afterinsertrecord

    dim js as c
    dim ar as p
    ar.defaultValue_CustomerId = e.dataSubmitted.CustomerId
    dim json as c
    json = vartojson(ar,.f.,.t.)
    js = "{grid.object}.setStateInfo(" + json + ") ;"
    e.rtc.A_AjaxResponses[].text = js
    e.rtc.A.AjaxResponses[..].id = 1

    end function

    Re: Setting Default value in Grid video M8

    I have done this and it works ok for me.

    It looks like you may have forgotten to close your if statement as well as a missing semicolon,
    Code:
    if(e.rowNumber == -1 ) {
    var newvalue = this.stateInfo.defaultValue_CustomerId;
    var ele = $('{Grid.ComponentName}.V.R'+e.rowNumber+'.CustomerId')[B][COLOR="#FF0000"];[/COLOR][/B]
    ele.value = newvalue; [COLOR="#FF0000"][B]}[/B][/COLOR]

      Frank thanks I can not believe I did not see that thats why this board is valuable.

      Now that I have fixed all that I am getting this error code. Is this because I am on a version below that functionality?
      Error executing afterInsertRecord event handler: command: e.rtc.A.AjaxResponses[..].id = 1 Unexpected internal Alpha Five error.
      Please send the following information to technical support at Alpha Software.
      Source code (not on your machine) ..\GENERIC\DATA_UT.cpp at line 3919.

        I also cannot get this to work.
        My code is as follows:
        Server side
        AfterInsertrecord
        Code:
        dim js as c
        	dim ar as p
        	ar.defaultvalue_distrib = e.dataSubmitted.distrib
        	dim json as c
        	json = vartojson(ar,.f.,.t.)
        	js= "{grid.object}.setStateInfo(" + json + ");"
        	e.rtc.A_AjaxResponses[].text = js
        	e.rtc.A_AjaxResponses[..].id = 1
        Client side
        afterRowPopulate
        Code:
        if(e.rowNumber == -1 ) {
        	var newvalue = this.stateInfo.defaultValue_distrib;
        	var ele = $('{Grid.componentName}.V.R'+e.rowNumber+'.DISTRIB');
        	ele.value = newvalue;

        }
        The field that is supposed to be populated in the new row is saying "undefined".
        I also see that in the e.rtc.A_AjaxResponses[].text = js in the debugger that the json statement is being truncated, but I do not know why. Maybe this is why it is not working.

          javascript is case sensitive, so it is no surprise that your code does not work.

          you set a variable called 'defaultvalue_distrib' in the stateInfo object, but then you try to read a variable called 'defaultValue_distrib' in your afterRowPopulate event.

          there is no such variable and hence the value inserted into the field is 'undefined' which is correct.

          if you fix your code (use either uppercase 'v' or lowercase 'v') so that the variables names are the same when you set and read them, your code will work.
