Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Calander setup question- Events with multiple resources? Join Table?

I just started messing around with the built-in web2cal component, have it working with the auto-generated tables (mssql) but I am a little confused about how to best set up my table structures and all and have a few questions...

I am trying to build a reservation system for a company that manages vacation rental homes, so each property will need a calendar to manage its reservations. Properties can be blocked out for periods of time for use by the owners, it seems web2cal has an extension to help with this but my question is can I then generate a report showing occupied nights vs available nights (periods blocked by owner should not count as available)? Or would I need to do it as 2 different types of events, one for available nights and one for occupied nights (reservations)?

Next, each reservation has an associated move-in clean, move-out clean, and weekly maid service if the stay is longer than a week. Each of those cleans can be assigned to one or mutliple housekeepers.

From the property calendar I need to be able to see the reservations and cleans for that property, but I also want to be able to view and edit the cleaning appointments grouped by employee so their daily schedules can be managed.

Sounds like I need a join table or maybe a way to turn the group field into a dynamic calculated result or even a combination of the two but I am not sure how to wire up a join table to work with the calendar and event tables. I am thinking the event ID would then be the group field and the join records would join the event id with employee IDs and property ID. All my IDs are UUIDs so I don't think it is a problem mixing two of my tables and the events table into a single join table but I am thinking the calendar probably needs the real group field.

Anyone tackle this or am I going about this all wrong?

Ahhh... it clicked for me. Each rental property will have its own calendar grouped on propertyID and events will mainly be availability and reservations. Here's the part I wasn't getting- nested events. The reservations can then have their own calendar and events which are the cleaning appointments. The cleaning appointments use reservationID as the group field and also get tagged with propertyID in another field so it can be shown as a related calendar. The cleaning appointments in turn have their own events which are the employees assigned to the clean, with empID as the group field. This is now using the calendar's events table as the join table where I thought I needed an additional table in there. I was just coming at it backwards. Then each employee can have a calendar that also uses empID as the group field and see all the cleans that have been assigned to them. Rental property calendars can now be setup in a scheduling view and reservations can be drag and dropped between properties and dates, employee calendars can be set up in a scheduling view where cleaning appointments can be drag and dropped between employees and time slots, and the world is a happy place.

Now to see if I can actually get this to work as planned...

Did this ever work out for you? I am planning a similar project.
