Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Grid for Seating Plan - Records as a Cell

    Hi,

I may struggle to explain what I am looking for but here goes.

The Teachers setup what you call a seating plan which shows them where each child is sitting. I would need a grid that actually looks and works like a spreadsheet where I can have them select (in each cell) through a Lookup which student is sitting where. Also as not all classrooms have the same amount of desks in each row I would like them to be able to how many columns and rows that they have in a particular room. eg The room might have 8 desks across and 6 desks deep or 7 * 7.

    Hope this makes sense.

Any pointers or help gratefully received.

    Thanks

    Chris

    Hi Chris,

All things are possible with computers the only thing is cost. Just for starters have a look at this thread.

      Hi Chris,

If you want something that looks like a spreadsheet and works like a spreadsheet.... then why not just USE a spreadsheet?
It seems the rather obvious answer (not trying to be smart here) so why try to change something else into a spreadsheet when you can outright use one in stead?

        Chris,

See if this video shows any solution: http://www.screencast.com/t/z6ioIlowPi

The demo copy is here: http://ialpha5.com/Dynamic_cols/Tabb...s_tabbedui.a5w

That might solve the variable number of columns. Ideally your dropdown per cell would only contain kids that had not been previously assigned to a seat. So by time they came to the last seat, there would only be one kid in the dropdown.

You could do something like this with several classroom layouts: http://www.screencast.com/t/TTZjgcOaFDPf

WOW That is fantastic - Thanks for posting.

That looks like exactly what I would be looking for with a less elaborate layout. My offering would be purely lots of square boxes that shows who is setting in that position with some Key Results in the box. The user would click on a select which would go to a class pick list - they would then select the student who was sitting in that position and the square box would be populated with the data.

Do you have an example project that I can disect to see how you have gone about it.

            Thanks once again

Many Many reasons but to start with.

Because the system will be used by and end user that just selects a student for a cell and that cell is populated with key data that is ever changing for that student. We are talking about millions of records.

                  Steve

You are one smart cookie - You expertise blows me away.

That would work fine - I could preset the different layouts that we have - The teacher could then pick the layout for the particular room that they are in or better still I could pre populate the room table with the id of the layout and all that would have to happen is to select the student for the seat that they are sitting in if that makes sense.

Lee that is fantastic and right on the money and exactly what I am looking for. I would probably put the student details on each desk so that all student details could be seen at the same time.

Thanks for spending the time to have a look at the options.

Re: Grid for Seating Plan - Records as a Cell

This stuff looks amazing, and shows how much I still need to learn.

But I did a much simpler method myself in the project I am working on. I placed row and column fields in my database, and use a dropdown box to choose a letter for the row, and a number for the column, and these fields hide when not in editable mode. My grid is limited to 20x20.

I then used group breaks sorted based on the row, and set it to 20 columns.

Naturally if you don't have a record for an empty section, it will squish to the left, so you would need to create records for empty or unused cells if you want to have the rows even.

My computer crashed, and I am reinstalling everything on a new system, so I cannot show an example right now.

                          All

Thanks for your help on this today.

I have created quite a simple method for now that I am pleased with - but I can build on it.

I have 2 little problems that I would like a little help with - the main one being that you cannot use the dynamic filter in a lookup for more than one field and I want to use it for upto 8. The other problem I will explain when I post a video tomorrow.

Off to bed as it is 1 in the morning here.

Once again many thanks for all your help.

                          Chris
