Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Cascading Dropdown in Dialog Headache

    Hi All

In a dialog I have two dropdown fields, the first selects the company, the second a branch of the selected company. The data table is SQL

My SQL script for the first dropdown is as follows:

SELECT DISTINCT CompanyName, CompanyCode FROM tbl_orgcompanies ORDER BY CompanyName, CompanyCode

The display value is CompanyName and the stored value is CompanyCode

The SQL script for the second dropdown is:

SELECT DISTINCT BusinessAreaName, BusAreaCode FROM tbl_orgbusinessunits ORDER BY BusinessAreaName, BusAreaCode
The parent control for this drop down is CompanyCode

The display value is BusinessAreasName and the stored value is BusAreaCode

When I enter a new record the CompanyCode and BusAreaCode fields work correctly.

If I save the CompanyCode without saving a value in the BusAreaCode and then later try to select a BusAreaCode the dropdown list shows a combination of the BusinessAreaName and the BusAreaCode as if the two were concatonated. The value is also not saved when the data is submitted.

The same happens when I try to update an existing record by changing the BusAreaCode

This issue has brought my project to a grinding halt. Urgent pointers would be appreciated.

    Best Regards
    Andrew

(Correction - This does NOT work either! A5V11-Build 3191 (pre-release))
I had similar issue in a Dialog2 component. I replaced the two dropdown controls with two textboxes (for the display values) and two hidden fields(for the code values). I set the Textboxes to use grid component lookups and turn on "User must select from list". Use at least a "Dynamic" filter on the second control's lookup definition to tie it to the filter code from the first listbox.

Re: Cascading Dropdown in Dialog Headache

It is a feature that is lacking in A5v11. It is a timing issue that could be solved in the backend by Alpha, but for us users we need to trigger an additional callback for each cascade in sequence.
I personally work around it with javascript, but it is moderately complicated as I am recursively triggering callbacks with onchange events until all cascades are finished - I have up to 4 cascading dropdowns.
What Rich suggests may be an easier option depending....

Re: Cascading Dropdown in Dialog Headache

(CORRECTION: My method did NOT work until A5V11 Build 3202-4070. As of the Jan 22, 2012 prerelease my described method works. Thanks so much Alpha. I don't know if official releases prior to this pre-release worked or not. )

I put more data in to test my dependant lookup textbox and I discovered while the choices it presents the second time it is opened (with a different filter value from its parent control) are correct it will not save any of those choices back into the dialog! Instead, by the position of the choice in the listbox, it populates the Dialog with the entry from that position from the first list it displayed! And if the listbox has more choices the second time than it did the first time then the "select" button by the extra choices does nothing as there was no corresponding entry in that position the first time it opened.

Re: Cascading Dropdown in Dialog Headache

Hi Rich and Andy. I've sorted it by using the Lookup feature, it filters correctly and saves but I've had to split my textbox into 2, 1 for the lookup value and 1 for the displayed value. The fields were added into SQL as well. This needs to be reported as a bug but my "Send a bug report" in the help menu also has a bug!

            Andrew,
I reported my version of the issue as a bug and Alpha promptly corrected the issue in build 3202-4070.

              Thanks Rich
I have build 3044-4041 which is most probably why this is still an issue.
