Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Multiple Smaller Apps or 1 big app?

I am currently in planning stages of several projects. These projects are somewhat distinct but will be utilized by the same group of users. Am I better off to plan 1 big app (maybe 250 pages) or as many as 5 smaller apps with anywhere from 25 to 75 pages? If using one big app would it be best to create a different tabbed ui for each project and then use navigation to get there or just one big tabbed ui and then utilize security to limit what everybody sees?

    Hi Curt,
I would use a single application, design it carefully taking into consideration the commonality of the features, then you can have your menu options in the TabbedUI controlled by the security groups, just try to get the security groups to a minimum if you can so it does not become a nightmare to setup, that is part of the design first, code later.

I had this experience with a large app. My first online application weighed in at 1.5mb, not huge, but large enough so that when the user clicked submit it had to push so much data that it gave the appearance of being hung and the user would close the browser before the submit had finished.
I broke my app into 11 pages and each one zips through nice and fast.

I have a similar situation and I handled it the way Progytech is suggesting. However, I had the opposite of what he cautioned with groups. I wish I would have created a few extra at the beginning. I think that precisely figuring out the proper number of security groups in the beginning is worth the time. I believe having an extra group is better than being one short though. It stinks to have to add one and go through every permission you've ever set.

In short, I like the tabbed ui method and only showing what the current user needs to see via group permissions.

If you have tons of buttons on your tabbed_ui you can allow the user to first pick an app after the login and then redirect to a particular tabbed_ui.

You can also create a pagelayout w. buttons to open tabs. Make the pagelayout be the tabbed_ui's homepage. The possibilities are endless.

It's really a question of personal preference.

As per Peter, but I would recommend using a dialog component instead of a pagelayout - added flexibility and functionality.

                Curt,

250 pages is not really that many. I have a client with more than twice that many. He does it all in one tabbedUI (it complies to more than 30,000 lines of code) but is still very fast. He puts buttons on the main page to move from function to function like this:
                Capture.PNG

Personally, I prefer a few tabbedUI to keep the users organized, but keep it to 2 or 3. You can put navigation links in the header of the TabbedUI. It is busy, but it save your working space, like this:
                Capture1.PNG

Regardless of what you choose, the more important issue is setting up a good naming convention so you can quickly find what you are looking for in a list of 500 pages and components. Steve Wood has a good write-up at AlphaToGo.com
