Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Query Filter for fields of a certain length?

I have a field called "Resume" which sometimes has a resume in it and sometimes not, and sometimes just a short note from the office saying there is no resume inside.

I would like to do this:

    IF len(RESUME) < 50 THEN
    checkbox.resume.enabled = false
    END IF

How would I do this in Alpha speak?

What type of field (data) character, memo, rtf memo?

    If character,

    IF len(alltrim(RESUME)) < 50 THEN
    checkbox.resume.object.enabled = .f.
    END IF

if checkbox.resume is a valid path to the object.
    There can be only one.

Thank you Stan, I thought I was on the right track with my logic, but something still is not quite right.
RESUMEFIELD is a longtext (sql) and its associated textarea box populates fine.

When I add the condition: len(alltrim(RESUMEFIELD)) > 25 to the Server Side Show/Hide,
the checkbox is absent in all cases, so it must be that I am not referencing my textarea correctly.

Would be nice if we had a resumefield.text property like visual studio but alas...

Your original post didn't mention sql.

A field object on a form does have a .text property. If you are speaking of a form............

Quickest way to discover the path to the object is use the Object explorer and drill down to the object. With the form open in design mode, View menu, Object Explorer.

I'm confused about what version of Alpha you are using.

I see posts for v11 WAS and v9 desktop. Just want to be clear about the version the question is for..

            I'm using v11 3202.
I'm just trying to get the length of data inside a textarea on a dialog so I can decide whether or not to display a checkbox control on the Show/Hide property condition.

              Michael,

The current desktop Alpha, non beta release candidate is 3044.

Are you working with the desktop version?
Are you speaking of a dialog component or an xdialog or ..............

Or we can keep playing guessing games as long as you like.

                Sorry Stan,
It's a web dialog populated from SQL.
I'm running the release candidate 3202, which is pretty good for my needs.

I moved the thread to what I think is the proper forum.

                    Hi Michael,

                    Have you tried len(resumefield) > 25 as a client-side show/hide expression ?

                      Thanks once again Gregg!
I had tried that statement before but it was in server side. Works in client side.

                        Glad to help.
I would have thought it should work as a server-side expression,
but after reading closely , it appears the server-side show/hide expression
is more for session variables or arguments defined in the properties section.

Hopefully someone more knowlegeable than myself will confirm or deny that.
