Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Report with HTML formatted fields

    Hello everyone,

I am using a memo field from Access and on my A5 grid I have it defined as HTML. The user can edit it nicely, italics, underline etc... but when going to print it in a report it comes out with all the tags - obviously not what we want. How do I get the field to print the same as it looks on screen?

    Thanks

    -John

Re: Report with HTML formatted fields

Well, almost. Works when printing but if trying to send to Word then it seems to lose the formatting.

        When printing it looks like
        1. Apple
        2. Orange

        when exported to Word

        1.
        Apple
        2.
        Orange

So....what's the trick to have it export to Word correctly?

        Thanks

Use a layout report, that's what they are designed for.

              Hi Peter,

Thanks for the reply. I tried it using the layout report and maybe I'm missing something because it comes out the same; not fomatted, and if I export it to Word or RTF file it's unformatted also. I looked in the help file and started with a Quick Report then saved it as a Layout Report with the same results.

Have you had success with creating a report in Layout and exporting the formatted text to Word? I'm using an Access Memo field not DBF if that makes a difference.

                John,

I think you should try putting the text in an html object in the layout report.

                  Hi Peter,

I don't see any way to do that on a Layout Report.

Re: Report with HTML formatted fields

I've tried creating a calculated field on a layout report: T = printHTML(thetext), it prints just fine. Field on the left is just the straight field, on the right is the T = printHTML(thetext)

                    layout1527.jpg

but again, clicking on the Word button to export it to Word gives me this:

                    layoutInWord.jpg

Am I trying to do something A5 cannot do? Has anyone been able to do this?

                    Thanks

Re: Report with HTML formatted fields

I'm thinking that layout tables format properly in Word/Excel if the formatting is done in the layout table itself. If you are reading embedded HTMl it probably won't format. But I can't say for sure; haven't tried it.

                        Hi Peter,

I'm beginning to think the same. I did try this though and it seemed to work, I printed to PDF which works fine and then from PDF I did a Save As a Word document. I don't really want to tell people to go through those steps though, I just wish it would go to Word immediately and correctly.

                            Hi Scott,

Unfortunately not. I couldn't get it to work and had to print to PDF and then save as a Word doc which still isn't ideal but I didn't have anymore time to work on it.

I just want to weigh in and say reports in web applications are about as fun to work on as an ice cold engine, you strain real hard to fix something and bust your knuckles - you curse, you can't find a necessary tool, you need a beer to really get it done and finally when you get it running you think I aint touching that SOB again unless it's an absolute must.
