Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Ah! That does create an empty e._currentRowDataNew if the primary key is not specified. In that case, you need to specify the primary key in the Query (AlphaDAO) setup and include that field in the grid. There's a "Select Primary Key" button (it's "Select Primary Key(s)" if you used the view in the SQL Select Statement option) that will let you pick the primary key for the view.

    Thanks for getting back to me Tom.

    Re: Why is e._currentRowDataNew.rec_id producing error - element not found?

    The only way I was able to reproduce the error mentioned in this thread was to NOT specify '_getData=true', ie NOT check the "Compute current row data". You MUST check "Compute current row data" (action javascript ) or pass in "_getData=true" as the final parameter for {grid.object}.ajaxCallback, otherwise the e._currentRowDataNew variable will not be created.

    Action Javascript Setup:
    callbackSetup.png

    If calling with straight JS:
    Code:
    {grid.object}.ajaxCallback('G',{grid.rowNumber},'handleClick','','_getData=true');
    Here's my handleClick function. It displays a listing of all the properties available in e._currentRowDataNew, if present. Else, you get a message that it is not defined:
    Code:
    function handleClick as c (e as p)
    	dim currentRowData as c = if(variable_exists(e._currentRowDataNew), stritran(js_escape(PROPERTIES_ENUM(e._currentRowDataNew)),"\n","<br>"),"e._currentRowDataNew is undefined.")
    	dim js as c =<<%js%
    var title = "Debug";
    var html = "<div style=\"padding:10px;\">e._currentRowDataNew properties:<br/><div style=\"padding-left:15px;\">{currentRowData}</div></div>";
    var buttons = "o";

    A5.msgBox.show(title,html,buttons);
    %js%
    	handleClick = evaluate_string(js)
    end function
    If you ARE passing in "_getData=true" (aka, have checked "Compute current row data"), then there's something else at work here. If this is the case, please post your code---both the calling javascript and the xbasic---so others may inspect it for possible problems. Also, make sure you do not have errors elsewhere in your component.

    Drew,

    This happened so long ago that I don't remember what workaround I used to allow my project to move on. I got no replies other than those listed above.

    I keep getting the error that this element (e._currentRowDataNew.rec_id) can not be found , but it IS there. To be honest, I have defined this field to be a link for opening up the detail part. Thought that might be a problem so I tested other character fields that are not special but get the same type of error. Only the name is changed. It's almost as if the "e._" construct is not working.

    Any clues would be appreciated.
    It doesn't look like it's there if you're getting errors. If it's reproducible in the debugging environment (working preview), run it through the debugger. If not, use PROPERTIES_ENUM(e._currentRowDataNew) - will produce a list of all the properties for e._currentRowDataNew. Dump it in a file or return it in some js = "console.log('" + js_escape(PROPERTIES_ENUM(e._currentRowDataNew) + "');"

    is this rec_id the primary key?

    in the definition of ajax callback, when you declare the xbasic declaration
    the last line compute current row data or something that should be checked in order for the data to be available unless rec_id is primary key then it should be available,
