Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Newbie question

I want to try developing a Web app on my home network, which I use for development work.
I have V11 full and RT versions installed on one PC, and V10.5 on two PC's.

Now, to test how well I am getting on with learning the black arts of WAS, can I configure one of the PC's on the local network to act as a server if I run the server which comes bundled with Alpha?

I want to test and see how well I take to all this before investing in a WAS license, and I want to prove the links, and not just that it all runs on one PC which I know works.

What should I be doing in order to use a web app on one PC by accessing it from another?

    All advice gratefully received.

    Re: Newbie question

Yes you can! I believe you can have up to 3 users using the builtin server of your developer copy. Performance will not be great though. I even tried adding a WAS license key into my developer copy but it did not give me any better performance so I deactivated that again.

As far as buying a WAS license goes I'd strongly advise against; you're much better & cheaper off buying a subscription for your own development environment which includes a WAS license + everything you can dream off. WAS licenses is just when you roll out webapps on a VPS for customers and those customers have to pay for that license anyway.

    Cheers

      hello

as far as i know the webserver that comes bundled with can support only calls from that machine.
if you need to access from outside that computer then you will need was license.
each version of alpha server is version specific not inter changeable.
yes you can easily set up local intranet using one pc as server and when you have was license access that computer from anywhere including the other computers in your home.
      hope this helps.

        Re: Newbie question

Subcription is off the radar, Frank.
I am sure that I have connected to a V10.5 server instance through IP's however displaying IP addresses in Win 7 requires you to NOT be logged in to a Workgroup, so it's a lot of fiddling.
So for the hard of thinking, how would I go about connecting - step by step.

          Ted,

If you're on a local network you don't really need to do anything. Just point your browser at the server. But I don't know if Alpha lets you do that w/o a license?

I am able to access my developer WAS from another machine. I just tested it using an iPhone.

                That USED to be so.

Don't understand what you are telling here, just fire up a browser on some machine & point to http://ipaddress You don't even have to enter the name of the page you're browsing to if it is index.a5w for example because that is one of the defaults the server tries to load. Workgroups and/or domains or whatever have nothing to do with this at all you just need to be in the same ip range.

@ DaveF. How did you do that?
@ Peter. If you are in a workgroup in Win 7, the IP addresses are hidden. If you leave the workgroup the Ip addresses are visible.
@ All. I believe that the IP address to the root of the app should work, and I am convinced that I have done this in XP.

Hidden from me when I run MyIPs on any PC.
http://192.168.1.70 does not display anything and now amount of cursing will do it.
If you can connect to a separate PC with a index.html page in the root folder, please can I see the actual string you are usiung as I cannot get it to work using all sorts of combinations.

                        Re: Newbie question

Sorry, I may have misled you. I can use my development WAS from a remote device, but I do have a WAS license activated for it. However, before I activated the license I was able to access the development WAS remotely for about 30 minutes at a time and then the connection would expire. I had to stop the server and start it back again to get another 30 minute session.

                          http://your_server_name[port_number if different from 80]/[folder_name]/index.html
                          [..] are optional
if MyIp does not work can you start a command prompt and type in
ipconfig and see the server ip address. if you know the name of the server, you don't need the ip address.

                          hope this helps.

                            Ted,

can you ping 192.168.1.70 from the machine you are using to browse ? Disable your firewall on the "server" machine & see what happens. if you use http://192.168.1.70 you should get onto a default page of your "server" machine & even if there were no default page as listed in the server settings (General/default page) then you'd get a message identifying the server.

The 30 minutes limit is a protection, using the server in your developer copy is only intended for testing purposes.
