Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Javascript function ignored when component published to the web server

I have a dialog2 component with 2 javascript functions. One of the functions has been there for several months while the other was added today. When I use Live Preview and view the component with FireFox and FireBug, I can see that both functions are being loaded in the "loadJavascript" function and both work without issue.

When I publish the component to the web server and view the same component on an A5W page with FireFox/FireBug, I can see that only the second (original) function is being loaded by the "loadJavascript" function and the new function is being left out.

I have deleted all the the files from the web root on the server and republished all the project files but to no avail - the new function is not included in the new version sent to the server.

I'm not sure where the problem is but I could use some suggestions on what I can try to resolve the issue (likely something small that I'm just overlooking). I spent the better part of the afternoon on this and I'm out of ideas.

    Thanks in advance,
    Peter

    Peter,

Have you tried to clear out the cache of your browser ?

Rather then embedding your js functions into the component you could put them in an external .js file and then in the component properties indicate what "linked js files" the component needs. This approach does have some advantages as you thereby open up your js functions for use in multiple components and/or a5w pages.

First off, thanks for the advice on the external .js file. It is a good idea for multiple use as you indicated. I did have a look at the "linked js files" option and will likely use this in the future.

Your suggestion on clearing the browser cache got me looking with more determination outside of Alpha for the solution.

It turns out that the problem had nothing to do with Alpha but rather with a pointer to the web site itself. We have a production web site and a test web site and somehow an update to the firewall software had the web addresses for both sites pointing to the production web root. I was updating the test web root and was not seeing my changes in the served pages from the test web site. Simple solution in the end but quite frustrating when you are tracking backwards through the code and components to find it.

      Thanks again,
      Peter
