Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Show/Hide Expression Linked Grid dbf tables

I'm trying to create an expression to hide a linked grid if there are no records to show. I browsed the forum and there are some threads with similar questions but not a straightforward answer. I also watched a video by Steve Wood but it is not my case. The expression area in the linked grid for the show/hide expression is just a text field and does not provide a builder. The filter to create should be very easy to do but I'm not getting the result.

The page shows a description of a course and it has an area with various linked grids in a tab container
    1st tab shows the description
    2nd shows course lectures
    3rd shows professor bio
4th related courses linked by same subtopics (Math, Astronomy, Psychology, etc.)
I want that 4th tab to be hidden if there are no related courses.
    Any Idea?

I put the expression subtopic<>null_value() which a similar formula works in the professors tab which have a linked grid showing courses by the professor, but it is not working with this linked grid

    Elliot,

Are you wanting to hide the tab pane rather than just the linked grid inside the tab pane?

Ok, there are many ways to do this. Since you want to hide the tab, the code to do it will have to be outside of the grid component. Can you execute a SQL count or select equivalent from the dialog (onInitializeDialog event perhaps or an Xbasic function that populates the dialog controls) to determine if any related courses exist? Then set a session variable to true or false indicating whether any records exist.

Then you can use the 4th tab pane's server-side or client-side show/hide expression to show or hide the tab pane. You may not be able to use the server-side expression depending on how your dialog works. You can check a session variable that you create for this purpose to determine if you should show or hide the tab pane. You can add an expression to the client-side property that checks your session variable for true or false. You may have to publish the session variable if you do it this way. Or you can call a Javascript function that checks the session variable or does an AJAX call back to the server and executes the SQL command to check for related courses at that time.

There are a few ways to do this and some ways depend on how your dialog works. Is it a modal dialog that only shows related records for just one master record? Or can you navigate to different master records and need to show or hide the 4th tab pane each time you display a new record?

        Hope this helps.

I'm really confuse about this. First I'm working with dbf tables, so no need for sql statements. I will post a video showing you how the page is displayed.

Sorry, I didn't notice the dbf tables in the title. I've never worked with A5 and dbf tables, but there should be more than one way to get the number of records that meet a certain criteria. What about using tablecount() to see if there are any related course records?
