Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Ken, these values get passed into a callback via the e object.

      let me look.

now i basically manually add it into argument

      like session_protected__object_name = "dialog_name" or grid name

was hoping to be able to capture it & simplified it ... not a big deal just curious
      if such function exist

Re: function to know the name of the current dialog or grid

I am not sure how you are calling your function, but I'm saying that if it is a callback, the a debug(1) in the callback will allow you to view the e object which contains info about the calling grid or dialog.
          e.g. e.tmpl.componentPhysicalName

Re: function to know the name of the current dialog or grid

            ok i use

            e.tmpl.componentName

and interestingly , the result name becoming like :

            TBI_BUILDING_L_165033JRHN_BUILDING_L_215025TEEI_UNIT_LIST__GAOT_ABC_PAYMENT_SI_UYWJ

the actual name dim by alpha was :

            .......

            DIM tmpl.guid as C = "8471d5aa-9e94-4bc3-a152-2a5ac4a6eb2c"
            DIM tmpl.style_name as C = "MobBlue"
            DIM tmpl.componentName as C = "payment_single_entry"
            DIM tmpl.componentFilename as C = "C:\property_management\property.WebProjects\Default.WebProject\payment_single_entry.a5wcmp"
            DIM tmpl.page_fields[0] as P

I do not plan to pursue further, however would appreciate future feedback on
getting component's name into a variable for purpose of tracking what user's are up to.

my function is a simple one in .aex

i call it on the server side... on initialize
function working well, i manually coded , would be nice just place my function
into every server initialize event ...

my function is very simple, in case some want to know...
i capture, window user logon name, computer name,
i will add logitude & latitude this afternoon, so we get better idea.
notice template name variable being manually dimmed during server initialized event

Re: function to know the name of the current dialog or grid

Right, so what I was saying is that your function should accept an argument - the "e" object or equivalent, depending on where you call your function from. The function would then operate "similar" to a callback in that you would now have access to component-specific data.

              e.g.
              FUNCTION user_log AS C (e as P )
              ...

              Andy.

Re: function to know the name of the current dialog or grid

thanks, i would expect the result be like plain equivalent to "payment_single_entry"
however, the result is some kind of coded string instaed...

knowing that in the dialog xbasic codes... the variable is dimmed as
                DIM tmpl.componentName as C = "payment_single_entry"

anyway, i will accept more lecture hi, or just keep trying.

Re: function to know the name of the current dialog or grid

Ken, I don't think it makes sense looking at the xBasic tab in this case. The debug(1) call in your function (assuming you have passed in the e object) will show you what is available. As I said before, check
                  e.tmpl.componentPhysicalName
You only need to parse this string and you will have the name of the component.
