Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Intermittent Session Variables?

    Sometimes setting a session variable works, sometimes it doesn't.

    Code:
    If variable_exists("session.eid") then
       delete session.eid
    end if

    dim session.eid as c
    vclient = sql_lookup(cn,table,filter,result)
    session.eid = vclient
    In the receiving dialog I have:

    Code:
    e.control.empid = session.eid
    Error complains about a missing sub-element "eid"

    As mentioned earlier, sometimes it works, other times it doesn't.
    Why would this be? Could it be my sql_lookup?
    Or is this a session thing?

    Re: Intermittent Session Variables?

    I have since verified that my sql_lookup is not the problem:

    Code:
    dim session.eid as c
    while session.eid = ""
       vclient = sql_lookup(cn,table,filter,result)
       session.eid = vclient
    wend
    What would prevent session variables from being set?
    The code moving past the while...wend proves that session.eid is being made,
    but when the next a5 page runs, session.eid is found or not found.
    This plays hell with processing users.

      Re: Intermittent Session Variables?

      Where are you setting the session var? If on the same page that the dialog appears, make sure your xbasic to set the var is above the dialog code on that A5W page. BTW, the while..wend does not create your session var, the dim statement creates the session var.

        Re: Intermittent Session Variables?

        Couple things.

        In the current V11, it is better to not dim session variables. Instead, just assign them a value. So, instead you could try
        session.eid = ""
        while session.eid = ""
        vclient = sql_lookup(cn,table,filter,result)
        session.eid = vclient
        exit while
        end while

        That is, remove the delete, the variable exists and the dim statements. When you are finished with the session variable, then delete it.

          Thank you Steve and Pat for your help on this.
          It's keeping me from moving forward.

          I'm setting the session variable in the afterDialogValidate event of dialog1,
          and trying to read it in the onDialogInitialize event of dialog2, dialog3, etc.

          As mentioned earlier it was 50-50 on whether it gets set.

          I'm going to try Pat's code and report back.

            Just to muddy the waters, building off of what Pat said, "session" is no longer a variable pointer, rather is is an "object". "eid" becomes an attribute of the object. So you don't dim the session object. All that said, for me, it's still a session variable.

              Re: Intermittent Session Variables?

              I discovered what the problem was.
              The link to the login page was http://
              whereas the rest of the project was in https://

              When I logged in under https the session variable was seen in the other https pages.

              Nice tip to know about.
