Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Can Report Server see Session Variables?

    I have a routine that produces up to 20 reports, then appends them together to form one report. Until yesterday, it was working OK, but I felt the need to "improve" the process, so I installed the Report Server subscriber benefit (4 cores). Now, it looks like the Session Variables cannot be found. I'm using the amiyuni style reports because the layout reports are too difficult to work with.

    I have about 60 session variables that I use to pass data to the reports. At one time, there was also a mention of being able to use arguments to pass variables, but the message said it wasn't working, so I haven't tried it.

    So, my questions are:
    Is anyone successfully passing data to reports by using session variables? Is there some trick to it, or does it just work?

    Does the arguments method work with reports and report server in V11?

    No pressure, of course, it only has to be working again by tomorrow when everyone comes to work!

    Any help would be appreciated greatly!

    Pat,

    From the v11 release notes:

    Build 3034- 4037 - Released - 2 Nov-2012

    Features

    Report Server - Session Variables - Session variables in reports are now supported in the Report Server. Previously, the Report Server could not see session variables.

      Re: Can Report Server see Session Variables?

      Thanks Peter, for pointing out that statement, but despite the statement, it is not working for me. It worked for me before I installed the report server. After install, it doesn't. Is there someone who is actually getting it to work? Is there a secret?

      I've tried it in 22 different reports, and it is not working.

      I'd be happy to jump up and down on my left foot if that makes it work.

            We use 'em a lot Pat. I'm done for tonight but if still pending on Monday let me know. It would be helpful to know/see/understand exactly how you're trying to use the session variables in the report -- there are a lot of different uses and places.

              Re: Can Report Server see Session Variables?

              I've disabled the report server, but hope to use it as soon as I can figure it out. We are currently doing 4 reports per day but are on track for 20 a day by the end of the summer.

              I use Session variables a lot in reports, typically in an Ajax callback triggered by a button. Some I set from data entered in the dialog2, such as
              Session.PREPARER = e.dataSubmitted.prepby
              Session.REVIEWER = e.dataSubmitted.reviewby

              Some from built in Alpha functions
              Session.PID_REV_DATE = NOW()

              Some from MySQL result sets
              Session.CLIENTNAME = crs.data("CLIENT_COMPANY_NAME")
              Session.CLIENTID = alltrim(str(crs.data("CLIENT_COMPANY_ID"),8,0))

              Some from functions I've created
              vUnits = crs.data("ELEVATION_UNITS")
              vValue = crs.data("SITE_ELEVATION")
              Session.ELEVATION = Get_Elevation_Display(vValue,vUnits)

              Then I print the report
              vReport3 = a5w_report_saveAs("designapr@c:\nfn_v11\nfn.alb","pdf","","",vSource,global_variables(),pdfopts,args,opts)

              In the report, I assign the session variables to calculated values
              calcPreparer = Session.PREPARER
              calcReviewer = Session.REVIEWER
              calcDrawnotes = printHTML(Session.DRAWNOTES)
              calcSpecs = printHTML(Session.SPECS)

              All that works fine without the report server, but with the print server, I just get the calcxxx names

                Re: Can Report Server see Session Variables?

                Well, a couple things occur to me Pat:

                1. All session variables must be character. Some "older" parts of A5 may let you get away with it still, but moving up to the report server might be a marker. Assigning now() as a session variable won't do.

                2. Getting the a5w_report_saveAs() function working took some doing (at least for me) so I wonder if you have all the pieces you need for that to function correctly. Here's an example of one that works:

                Code:
                	dim args as sql::Arguments
                	dim Options as p
                	dim printOptions as p
                	args.set("blank", "")
                	options.propogateErrors = .t.
                	printOptions.blank = ""
                	reportname = "MyReportName@[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\MyDatabaseName.alb"
                	saveAS = "PDF"
                	filter = ""
                	order = ""
                	filename = Request.GetRequestTempFileName("PDF")
                	a5w_report_saveAs(reportName,saveAs,filter,order,filename,global_variables(),printOptions,args,options)
                I think what I might be tempted to do with your situation is create a basic report with about nothing on it, then start feeding it and printing session variables until you find the problem. Easier said than done, I know.

                  Re: Can Report Server see Session Variables?

                  Can't wait. Got 8 people sitting on their thumbs who are supposed to be working. So, I removed the report server and all the reports are printing correctly just like before I installed it. I'll try again in V12 in the hopes that they fixed the problem. I'm sure it won't get fixed in V11. Meantime, reports are a serious problem for me!

                  Thanks to Chad and Steve for their suggestions and help.

                    UPDATE: I happened to test this, the Report Server in V12 does now properly print session vars saved to Calculated Field, as in Pat's recent post below.

                      Thanks Steve. I should have updated myself!

                      Yes, we are on V12 and up to 20 reports per day ( which is actually about 400 individual reports appended into 20 large reports ) and it is working fine.
