Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Retrieving login name to store in table

    Hi, I am trying to make a custom activity log table, storing information like time, date etc and the name of the user who performed an action. I would have thought that retrieving the username would be simple, but I can't find anything on how to do this.

    Any suggestions would be great, thanks.

    Look at the web security functions. There's a function there to get the user name. Also in security settings, Alpha give you a prototype function to capture login info which you can write to a table.

        Thanks, I found the function "a5ws_getcurrentuser()" and it seems to be exactly what I need, but I can't find a way to implement this, and have found no helpful documentation. I've tried setting it as a session variable for the button opening up my Dialog component, but it doesn't recognise the code as a function and just displays the plain text when I retrieve it in the component. E.g. Username = a5ws_getcurrentuser()

        I basically want to use this function as the default value of a control in my dialog, but can't get the session variable to work. Any ideas on where I'm going wrong here? Thanks

          I don't know where you are putting the code, but it should be:

          session.Username = a5ws_getcurrentuser()

            Ah, I have tried that too but my main problem is not knowing where to put the code. I'm trying this too on the control I want to display the login username on:
            Calculated Field Expression > Publish Session Variables > "SESSION.NAME = A5ws_GetCurrentUser()"

            Screenshot: http://imgur.com/vhXC21X

            And to display the session variable I'm using "=session.name" in the Default Value property of the control.

              Maybe you should try to put that line of code in one of the initialize xbasic events for your component (is this a grid?).

                Re: Retrieving login name to store in table

                It's a Dialog, so would it be as an xbasic function or an OnInitializeComplete clientside event? Apologies as I'm not very familiar with the coding side to Alpha Five yet, this is new to me.

                  Re: Retrieving login name to store in table

                  Client side events are JavaScript.
                  Server side events are xbasic.

                  You want the latter since that line of code is xbasic, so try the OnDialogInitialize event.

                        I'm trying to accomplish this but I can not get it.

                        I have a page with some tabbed controls, one of the tabs display some lectures, the lecture has a row expander that displays the lecture description, reviews by other users and an add review part. I want to automatically fill the username field in the add review part but I can't figure it out. the table has been setup with all the fields. All info is passed correctly except the username filed which always still blank...
