Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Can you perform "getValue" function on Quick Search field?

    I have a grid in which I have enabled the "Quick Search" feature.

    This enables me to quickly filter the grid based on a single field, which works well.

    However, when I add a new record, I want to pre-populate that same field with the value currently in the Quick Search field.

    For example, my grid has a SYSTYPE field and an EQUIP TYPE field.
    If I do a quick search for a SYSTYPE of "Electric", the grid shows only the records with Electric in that field. which is what I want.
    When I go to add a new record, I want the new record's SYSTYPE field to be preset to "Electric".
    I am trying to use the following code in the "AfterDetailViewNewRecord" to preset the field:
    Code:
    var stype = {grid.Object}._getValue('S','SYSTYPE');
    {grid.object}.setValue('D','SYSTYPE',stype);
    However this does not seem to work, as I haven't actually enabled the full Search Part of the grid.

    Is there a way for me to get the value from the search field of a Quick Search?

    I should also point out that if I use a static value in the above code( i.e set stype='Electric') it works as I want it to.

    Re: Can you perform "getValue" function on Quick Search field?

    Yes. But you have to use $gvs:

    Code:
    var getQuickSearchValue = function ()
    {
        var val = $gvs('{grid.componentName}.QUICKSEARCH');
        return val;
    }
    I found this using FireBug to look at the quick search's "Search" button to see how Alpha does it. This is what the onclick event looks like:

    Code:
    onclick="GRID1_GridObj.quickSearch($gvs('GRID1.QUICKSEARCH')); return false;"
    Good luck.

      Re: Can you perform "getValue" function on Quick Search field?

      Thanks very much. That works exactly as I need it to.

      So in the "AfterDetailViewNewRecord" to preset the field, I now do:
      Code:
      var val = $gvs('{grid.componentName}.QUICKSEARCH');
      {grid.object}.setValue('D','SYSTYPE',val);
      This places the value of the Quicksearch field into the corresponding new record field.

        Sarah,

        Would you so kind as to give me a quick lesson on how you found that specific onclick event? I am still learning all of the ins and outs of firebug.

          I used FireBug's Inspector tool:
          inspector1.png

          Using this tool, you can click on elements in the web page and it will highlight their HTML for you:
          inspector2.png

          Since Alpha embeds the logic for handling the Quicksearch inside the Search button, it took me all of a few seconds to find this information.

          IF that Search button didn't have all the logic right there in a handy onclick attribute, I would have gone about solving this as follows:

          First, I would use FireBug's inspector to find the ID for the search box:

          inspector8.png

          Quicksearch's text box ID is "CUST_HIDES_142854.QUICKSEARCH". I know that {grid.componentName} is being used here, but I'm not 100% sure what part of the Quicksearch's text box is the {grid.componentName}. This can be resolved by looking at one of the grid fields:

          inspector7.png

          The grid fields are of the format {grid.componentName}.V.R#.FIELD_NAME. In the image above, I see that the ID for the field containing "Randi" is "CUST_HIDES_142854.V.R2.FIRSTNAME". The common denominator between my Quicksearch field and my grid field is "CUST_HIDES_142854". So, I know that I must replace that portion of the id with {grid.componentName}:

          Code:
          // Gets the quicksearch text box element from the document
          var quicksearchField = $('{grid.componentName}.QUICKSEARCH');
          A search of Alpha's wiki for JS functions would lead you to $gvs: http://wiki.alphasoftware.com/~alpha...+in+Version+10

          Code:
          var value = $gvs('{grid.componentName}.QUICKSEARCH');
          Or, a search on Stack Overflow might lead you to this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1...-in-javascript
          Code:
          // $ is an Alpha shorthand for document.getElementById()
          var value = $('{grid.componentName}.QUICKSEARCH').value;
          But don't just go and assume these functions will work. Use the console window to test out the functions:

          inspector9.png

          The only things you really can't test are whether or not you got the {grid.componentName} or {grid.object} parts right in the final JavaScript. It falls to trial & error in Alpha to resolve those issues.
