Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Straight question on BAR CHARTS

I'd like to display a bar chart with 2 variables (axis X = Weeks, axis Y = Score) as a control component of a dialog.

These values are read from a table T1, kind of:

    ID - Week - Score
    1 1 2
    2 5 14

The process seems simple enough: build Dialog> Chart > Definiton > Data, and then define a series using SQL or table that has just these 2 fields, Week + Score. Something like: SELECT Week, Score FROM T1

Here comes the problem: how do you set up the chart options to show 'Weeks' on the X axis and 'Score' on the Y? Do you need 2 separate series (one being SELECT Week FROM T1, another being SELECT Score FROM T1), or just one with the 2 fields?

I've managed to display Scores on Y, but then the Week doesn't appear on the X axis (showing 1-2, NOT 1-5!). I've also managed to display Week and Scores as 2 series, both on Y (the Scores 2-14 are one blue bar, the weeks 1-5 appear on another adjacent bar).

    Some help appreciated, thanks!

If you need something more customizable - maybe try Google Charts.
    https://developers.google.com/chart/...llery/barchart

There are a lot of things I prefer to take the non-alpha route on (mainly because theyre better supported and have way better documentation/communities).
Searching for how to do things in alpha barely shows results.

        Hi Lee,

Yes, I did, a couple of days after the post. What surprised me was that, being such a basic chart, the process to generate it in Alpha5 was so 'tricky'; and nobody came up with a clear answer (nor that it is in the awful product documentation).

Are you looking for an answer or just curious? BW,

          Hi Alvaro,
And answer would be good for the rest of us as sooner or later others will hit the same situation.
          Thanks in advance

I'm working on it now. I noticed that I can get it to work in DBF but SQL is not working. Any insights would be helpful... Thanks in advance.

The reason why it works in DBF but not in SQL is probably because you're using aggregates (sum, averages, etc) in your queries. Have you checked that? Alpha5 doesn't seem to compute correctly Access queries with aggregates.

My project included charts changing depending on the volunteer, but I'll stick to the simplest solution (no filtering).

Re the process, in plain terms this is what I did (all key values in bold):

              • Create a dialog component.
              • Add a chart component to it.
              • Set up the properties as per the figure attached:

              CHARTS1.png

Now, the key point is the chart definition. You go to field "Data", open it and select the following parameters:
              -Chart type: Bar Vertical Overlaid
              -Data type: Numeric
-Data: add >> Data Series definition > .........define connection string (mine was to Access) > define query: sth like "SELECT noWeek, Score FROM tblResult" (the 2 vars you want represented)

Now, when you're about to close the series definition, click "Preview data" and select the Y-axis variable you want represented (in my case "Score"). The result should be similar to the figure: Series1.Score

Carry on completing the properties as follows:
              -Data label: Chart.data
-Category: [Series1.noWeek] (that is, the X-axis variable for the series name you just defined).

The rest of the fields don't really matter to get the chart right, are just titles. If you haven't used filtering, then you can click button "Preview" to make sure it's doing the right thing.

And I think that's roughly it!!

              BW

Re: Straight question on BAR CHARTS

Thanks for the info. The SQL and the DBF are exactly the same. Very simple x - Dates y- Pain rating 1-10. DBF works. In SQL if the first rating is a four the chart starts at four and doesn't go any higher. If the Chart Starts at a 10. It will show the other ratings properly. It might be the version.

I don't know why this work. I put an alltrim() on the number column in SQL. The chart now displays perfectly.

Good to know, it's one of these solutions that one only comes up with after many hours of 'proof and error'.
