Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Need help to understand variables in the web version

    I am having real trouble understanding variables.

    1. We are currently running a desktop version that uses several variables that are set up by an autoexec file that runs on startup. These work fine. We are converting our application to be web based and the same variables do not seem to be available in the web version. Reports that were set up in the desktop and use variables created in the Autoexec do not work when the report is called from a dialog rather than from a desktop form. Do I need to declare them again in the web version?

    2. I am generally struggling with creating variables in the dialog; both with where there are created and with the terminology. I read everything I can find in documentation on dialogs and variables and have watched all of the dialog component videos. Does anyone know of a comprehensive overview of variables for the web version that I can read or watch?

    I am running version 11 Build 3381

    Thanks for the help

    Steve

    Re: Need help to understand variables in the web version

    I'm not familiar with the desktop version, so hopefully you will get a response from someone more qualified. But if you could share what information you want to store in your variables I or others may have some suggestions. At this point I'm guessing in your autoexec you passed some command-line parameters to your application. If so we may have some suggestions on how you can get that same information in the web version.

      Re: Need help to understand variables in the web version

      Hi Matt

      To expand on part 1 of my question above:
      In my desktop version, the Autoexec sets up several Global variables, such as Company name, address, etc. that are used throughout on forms, reports etc. All of these constants are stored in a single record table called constants which autoexec reads into variables when it runs. As an example, many of the reports use a v_company_name variable created by Autoexec to post the company name at the top of each page.
      The idea is that if we moved our business, we could update the address info in one location on a form that updates the constants and then the reports will be correct. If I call a report from the desktop version the variables all work. If I call the same report from the web version, the variables do not work.
      My question is, how would I make these variables available in the web version (or is it there and I am missing it somehow) and if it is not available in the web version, how do I recreate it so that it works whether the report is called from the desktop or the web version? In the web version, I assume that I create the global variables in Project Properties, Application Global Variables but I don't understand the nomenclature to make this work.

      To expand on Part 2 of my question above:
      A good example of what I am trying to do is the following; I want to create a variable upon entering a record in a dialog to capture the current value of "price" and when the record is saved, post that variable’s value to the field "previous_price" if the value of "price" is altered. I thought that I should use a session variable that is set to the current value of “price” upon entering the record. Once I create the variable it is straight forward to post the variable value to the “previous_price” field if the record is changed. I am stuck on creating the variable because I don’t understand the language that I need to use to create it.

      Overall, I have spent days trying to understand creating variables in the web version. I have found that while there is tons of instruction created by Alpha, the instructions are giving me bits and pieces of the whole and I was hoping to find a comprehensive tutorial that will help me to put this all together in my mind. Any help on the individual problems or on a comprehensive tutorial would be appreciated.

        Re: Need help to understand variables in the web version

        are you using sql or dbf as backend?
        if sql, then connect to the table and use select to get all the values needed and use update to update with the data as needed.
        you can read about sql and web in one of the how to in wikipedia.
        you can also take a look at my blog.

          Hi Gandhi

          I am using all native dbf files in my application.
          Thanks for showing me your blog. I learned a few things I did not know but it doesn't address my issue with variables.

          Does someone know of a comprehensive tutorial on variables.

            to answer your part 2 question

            here is a short screencast
            http://screencast.com/t/MDsVWJpTyjak

            Code:
            function submitForm as c ( e as p)
            dim tbl as p
            	dim product_id as n
            	dim product_last_price as n
            	dim product_current_price as n
            	dim product_price as n

            	product_id = e._currentRowDataNew.id
            	product_price = e._currentRowdataNew.price
            	product_current_price = e._currentRowdataNew.current_price
            	product_last_price = e._currentRowdataNew.last_price

            	if product_price != product_current_price then
            		tbl = table.open("alpha_table1")
            		tbl.index_primary_put("Id")
            		tbl.fetch_find(product_id)
            		tbl.change_begin()
            		tbl.last_price = product_current_price
            		tbl.current_price = product_price
            		tbl.change_end()
            		tbl.close()

            	end if
            end function

              in addition, there is a whole set of videos
              total web programming with alpha or something similar. they discuss lots of methods.
              you might want to search for that.
              probably at the alpha site.
