Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Using session var 'userID' to read another value on the DB

    I've got a project where the data flow is quite standard:
    1. A user logs using a login screen (we get his session var userID there)
    2. He browses some info
    3. Then he enters some data from a dialog-grid, etc

    My problem is the following: on step 3, when he enters the info, I want one field that uses the identity of the user, say a student ID, and not his userID (available from the session var). I've got in the DB a table that matches every userID to his real ID, kind of:

    userID | RealID
    john123 GATX123

    So how could I read/obtain the realID?

    PS: I've just realised this should go on the Web forum. Copied there!

    Is this done in the login screen, adding another line after

    session.userid=lookup("C:\A5Webroot\<projectName>\websecurity_users.dbf","userid="+quote(userID),"userid") ?

    Or is there any other method that gives you the realID on the component of interest, like a dialog?

    Thanks in advance, p.

    The lookup you propose is likely the best way to do it. Though I think you want

    session.realid=lookup("C:\A5Webroot\<projectName>\websecurity_users.dbf","userid="+quote(userID),"realid")

      The "realid" will not be present in the websecurity_users table as those security tables should not be altered. Typically you have a "local" web_users table that is linked to the websecurity_users table either on GUID or USERID. That table would have your realid for each user. Then you would perform a lookup similar to this:

      dim pUser as p
      dim pUser.userid as c
      a5ws_logged_in_user_values(pUser)
      session.realid=lookup("[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\web_users","userid="+quote(pUser.userID),"realid")

      or preferably using an index named "userid"

      session.realid=lookupc("F",pUser.userid,"realid","[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\web_users","userid")

        Re: Using session var 'userID' to read another value on the DB

        Thanks Larry and Steve, but I'm a bit lost now!

        As said, my post should have been on the web forum (it's copied there too). My users 'realid'-'userid' match table is in an .MDB Access database, that has an alphaDAO connection. So are the tables in your replies in a database, or in a PC folder? I don't ge that.

        I guess session.readid 'reads' the realid in a table using 'userid' to filter and find the right one, but not sure what PathAlias means there, or about what the different parts in the lookup instruction are.

          If your data is in an Access table, ignore the mentioned "PathAlias.ADB_Path". My fault for introducing that without qualification. For Access, you would use standard SQL or Alpha's sql_lookup() function:

          Example:

          session.readid = sql_lookup(cn,"myusers","userid='"+pUser.userid+"'","realid")

            Re: Using session var 'userID' to read another value on the DB

            Thanks Steve, that helps very much. So let's say I have a project with 2 pages:

            login.a5w: A login page, where a session var USERID is captured. The code on this page is:

            Code:
            session.userid=lookup("C:\A5Webroot\GA3\websecurity_users.dbf","userid="+quote(userID),"userid")
            results.a5w: A results page, where I display some user info based on the REALID info.

            Following your suggestion, could I calculate on this page the REALID with JUST this single line (and then use it in subsequent pages):

            Code:
            session.realID = sql_lookup("::name::GA3","customers","userid='" + session.userid+"'  ", "realID")

            Questions:

            -Do I need to declare anything else before that line (for example, the var, or the connection)?
            -Can the sql_lookup be declared in PAGE 2 and used in PAGE 2 (in a component declared below), or you must declare it in PAGE 2 and then use in PAGES 3-4 .......?

            Thanks, p

            PS: I've tested the previous structure on PAGE 3 and it works. Still unsure about running the sql_lookup and using it on the same page.
