Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Cannot download an RTF file, other files ok.

I cannot seem to download an RTF file but other files .DOC, .XLS download fine. I have a memo field where I upload all 3 file types with no problem, then I tried d/l them again but I get a 404 error for the RTF, the other are okay. As far as I know I have the Project Properties okay. Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Hi John

Are you uploading the rtf file in the first instance as a blob? If you are you need to change to txt.

      Hi Glen,

Not sure what you mean by that. In the database it is a memo field (Access but could be DBF too) and I watched this video by Selwyn http://www.ajaxvideotutorials.com/V1...HTMLEditor.swf PDF, XLS, DOC, RTF all upload with no problem, it's when I click on the link inside the field the RTF gives me a 403 error whereas other files simply display or download as they should. I thought maybe I was telling A5 to not allow RTF but as you can see from the screenshot I'm allowing all types except .EXE files.

This must be a setting somewhere that I'm missing. Anyone?

        Thanks

Looking at the video I suspect the files are being uploaded to an upload folder.
I suggest you verify the contents of the upload folder to see if the RTF file was actually uploaded.
The message thread mentions both errors 404 #1 (file not found) and 403 #3 (forbidden)
If the error is 404 the RTF could be missing from the upload folder or contain invalid characters etc in the filename.
If the error is 403 the RTF extension might need to be allowed for download somewhere in the settings or maybe the server needs to be restarted.

            Hi Colin,

Thanks for replying. The error I'm getting is 403, I must have made a mistake earlier and typed 404, sorry about that.

The folder does indeed contain the files and they're all legit in their naming, no weird characters or spaces. I have rebooted the server, same error. My first screenshot is how I have it setup, allow all file types except .EXE. I also tried leaving the Allow File Types section blank but to no avail. I don't know where else to look to allow RTF files, all other files seem okay.

I have never tried RTF files or *.* and don't have v11 available to test currently. v12 appears to use web project properties for the filter.
Do you have web security enabled?. There are also some file extensions in page security which you could try.

                Hi John,
Something else you can try is to manually try to download the RTF and DOC files using the full url.
In my simple test the HTML editor appears to create an alink reference so you should be able to test the downloads to see if you get the 403 error with rtf
e.g. if your web root contains files mydoc.doc and mydoc.rtf and your web page address is published at
                http://localhost:82/MobileApp/_mytest.a5w
Full urls based upon the example above would be

                http://localhost:82/MobileApp/mydoc.doc
                and
                http://localhost:82/MobileApp/mydoc.rtf

a5_application.a5i also contains some download settings but should be automatically maintained and likely only used if download feature pack used

There are also some file extensions in the Websecurity, Page Security section under File Types Always Allowed which you can try.

                  Hi Colin,

I was a bit busy with another problem today so I'm just getting back to this. You solved it! I knew there must be somewhere that I could "allow" a file type and the Page Security, File Types Allowed did it!

Thanks a bunch for sticking with me on this.
